Women's Basketball Shows Strong Start in Loss to Top-Ten Yellowjackets

SMU Women's Basketball was defeated by Montana State Billings on Saturday, January 11th, 75-63.

BILLINGS, MT — Saint Martin's Women's Basketball (9-5, 2-4 GNAC) traveled east to take on the ninth-ranked Yellowjackets of Montana State Billings this past weekend in a GNAC contest.

The Saints would get out to a fast start due to a pair of three-pointers by Kiana Rios and Avery Oaster. Rios, who is currently on a six-game double-digit scoring streak, would end the game with 14 points, four rebounds, and two steals, while Oaster would follow closely behind with 11 points of her own, four boards, two steals, and the SMU's only block of the contest. The squad would be elevated to a 19-17 lead at the end of the first period thanks to the efforts of Jada Travis, who would go on to score 23 points while contributing a team-high five rebounds, three assists, and a steal. Montana State Billings would be quick to strike back in the second period, however, as the Yellowjackets' defense would slow down the Saints to just eight points before the half, and would head to the locker room with a 35-27 lead over Saint Martin's.

In the second half, the Saints would get back on pace offensively and would find production from Sarah Lamet, who would record eight points and four rebounds, along with Keeli Jade Smith, who would help keep SMU on-pace with four points, three boards, and three assists. Madelyn Brown would contribute three rebounds in her start and Kasey Booster would chime in during the game, but the Saints would struggle to close the gap on the ninth-ranked Yellowjackets. They would end up dropping the contest by a score of 75-63 and fall to 9-5 on the season. The Saints would go 23-50 (46%) from the field and 7-16 (43.8%) from beyond the arc.

The Saints are back in action this coming Saturday, January 18th, as they host the Western Oregon Wolves at 3:00 PM. You can get tickets here.
