HONOLULU, Hawaii — The Saint Martin's Women's Basketball team came just shy of a historic upset at the University of Hawaii in Honolulu on Thursday, November 13, falling to the Rainbow Warriors 46-41 in overtime of an exhibition matchup.
The Saints held leads after the first three quarters against their Division I counterparts and saw late chances in the fourth quarter to take the victory, but ultimately came up just shy of the upset bid.
How It Happened
First Quarter
- The Saints hit the opening basket of the game, a three-pointer by Kiana Rios that put SMU up 3-0.
- The first quarter went back and forth, as a three from Jaylah Brown later put SMU up 10-8, a score that would hold through the end of the first frame. The Saints limited the Rainbow Warriors to 3-12 shooting in the first frame and forced seven turnovers.
Second Quarter
- The Saints forced nine more Hawaii turnovers in the second quarter, holding a 16-6 advantage in turnovers at halftime.
- After Hawaii tied the game at 10-10, the Saints embarked on a 10-2 run to take a 20-12 lead with 4:39 remaining in the first half.
- After Hawaii came back with a big 9-0 run to take a 21-20 advantage, Saint Martin's closed out the half with a jumper off the glass and a pair of free-throws by Kiana Rios to take a 24-21 lead into halftime.
- Rios led the Saints with seven points at halftime, while Avery Oaster scored six. The Saints hit four three-pointers, while the Rainbow Warriors went 0-8. Despite a 25-13 disadvantage in rebounding, the Saints held an 8-3 edge in steals.
Third Quarter
- The Saints forced four more turnovers within the first three and a half minutes of the second half, pushing Hawaii's total to 20.
- Jaylah Brown scored six points in the third quarter, as the Saints extended the lead after three quarters to 37-29. The Saints closed out the frame with threes from Brown and Harper Wagner, extending a 31-29 lead to 37-29 with 10 minutes remaining in regulation.
- The Saints held the Rainbow Warriors to 0-14 shooting from beyond the arc through three quarters.
Fourth Quarter
- The Saints struggled scoring in the fourth quarter, going 0-8 from the field and being out scored 9-1.
- SMU held Hawaii to 3-18 from the field in the final frame, but a 9-0 run by the Rainbow Warriors and a scoreless drought by the Saints saw SMU trailing 38-37 with eight minutes remaining in regulation.
- Both teams went scoreless for just under seven minutes, until Kiana Rios drew a foul and went one for two at the line to level the game at 38-38 with 1:10 to go.
- The Rainbow Warriors saw three shot attempts in the final stages of regulation, but the Saints held the home team off the board and went to overtime with the game knotted at 38-38.
Overtime
- The Rainbow Warriors embarked on a 6-0 run out of the gates in overtime, before Avery Oaster got the Saints on the board with a free throw with 48 seconds remaining.
- SMU managed two more points off free throws from Madelyn Brown, but went 0-6 from the field in overtime and saw the game slip away to a 46-41 loss.

- Kiana Rios led the Saints with eight points, while adding three rebounds, three steals, and two assists.
- Avery Oaster and Harper Wagner each totaled seven rebounds.
- Jada Travis totaled five steals, four points, three assists, and three rebounds.
