Saints capture thrilling five-set victory over Northwest Nazarene

LACEY, Wash. — The Saint Martin's Volleyball team was victorious 3-2 against Northwest Nazarene at Marcus Pavilion on Saturday, November 8.

The match went down to the wire, but the Saints rode the momentum of a fourth-set victory to come from behind in the final frame and win 3-2. The win improved SMU's record to 12-11 on the season and 5-10 in conference play.

How It Happened

  • The Saints trailed 12-5 early in the first set, but several small runs piled up for SMU, bringing the game level at 18-18. The Nighthawks responded with a 7-2 run to close out the frame and win 25-20.
  • Saint Martin's trailed early in the second set, but a huge 7-0 run midway through put SMU up 13-7. Despite leading by as much as seven points later in the period, the Saints allowed a 5-0 run by the Nighthawks that saw SMU's lead trimmed to 18-17. The teams exchanged a flurry of points on both sides down the stretch, but a service error at set point gave SMU a 25-22 victory to level the match at 1-1.
  • The Saints saw their best team hitting percentage in the third frame, going .242%. After a neck-and-neck start, Northwest Nazarene capitalized on a 5-0 run to go ahead 15-10. The Saints trailed by as much as seven points, but used a 5-0 run to cut the deficit to 22-20 late in the frame. SMU came within 23-22 and 24-23, but a kill by Abby Black gave the Nighthawks set point, moving ahead 2-1 in the match.
  • After trailing early in the fourth, Saint Martin's fought back to tie the game at 18-18 in front of the home crowd at Marcus Pavilion. Down 22-21, SMU erupted for a 5-0 run that won the Saints the set and forced a do-or-die fifth frame.
  • The Nighthawks jumped out in front 6-2 in the fifth set, but a 6-0 run flipped the script and put Saint Martin's up 8-6. After an exchange of points, Saint Martin's rattled out a 6-2 run to force match point. NNU secured a point off a service error, but the Saints secured the match-winning point off a ball-handling error, completing the comeback victory and securing a thrilling five-set win in GNAC play.
