Arcata, Calif. — The Saint Martin's Women's Basketball team suffered a 61-44 defeat at Cal Poly Humboldt on Monday, December 15.
The Saints were out scored by double figures in the first quarter, forcing the Saints to play from behind in a competitive second half. The loss dropped the Saints' record to 6-6 on the year.
How It Happened
First Quarter
- The first 2:26 of gameplay was scoreless, before Humboldt opened the scoring with a layup and Avery Oaster responded to level the game at 2-2.
- A three-pointer by Kiana Rios at the 5:10 mark put the Saints up 5-4 halfway through the quarter.
- The Lumberjacks responded with an 11-0 run, putting Saint Martin's behind 14-5 with 2:56 left in the quarter.
- The Saints saw a layup by Avery Oaster down the stretch, but Cal Poly Humboldt pulled ahead 19-7 after the first quarter, behind a 63.6% shooting clip as a team.
Second Quarter
- A layup by Avery Oaster and three-pointer by Jada Travis within the first minute of the second quarter saw Saint Martin's trim the deficit to 19-12.
- The Saints came within six (22-16) with 7:01 left in the first half, but an 8-0 run by Humboldt saw the home team pull ahead 30-16 with 3:55 on the clock.
- A layup by Harper Wagner ended the Humboldt run, as Saint Martin's went into halftime trailing 30-18.
Third Quarter
- The Lumberjacks opened the second half on an 13-1 run, putting the Saints behind 43-19 with 3:58 remaining in the quarter.
- The Saints rallied to close out the corner, going on a 14-5 run to trim the deficit to 48-34 heading into the final frame.
Fourth Quarter
- The Saints trimmed Humboldt's lead down to 13 points midway through the quarter, but were unable to make up any further ground as the Lumberjacks went on to win 61-44.
Top Performers
- Avery Oaster recorded a double-double, leading the Saints with 11 points and totaling 10 rebounds.
