Women's Basketball Outpaces the Falcons in Weekend Showdown

SMU Women's Basketball defeated Seattle Pacific on Saturday, February 8th, 78-63.

LACEY, WA — Saint Martin's Women's Basketball (13-8, 6-7 GNAC) took on the Seattle Pacific Falcons this past weekend at Marcus Pavilion as a part of a GNAC doubleheader.

The Saints would open the game with an impressive scoring stretch, jumping out to a quick 14-2 lead before the Falcons would get their own offense going. Jada Travis would get to work early, scoring 26 points throughout the contest on 8-15 (53.3%) shooting. Travis would be followed closely behind by Sarah Lamet, who would have her third double-digit scoring performance in the team's last four games, putting up a career-high 23 points. By the end of the first period, the Falcons would claw back and take a 17-16 lead that they would carry over into the following period. SMU would pick their scoring efforts back up before the half, and reclaim a solid nine-point lead going into the break with a 32-23 lead.

In the second half, the Saints would continue their scoring efficiency while tightening down on defense. Lamet would stand out on this side of the ball as well, as the 6'4" junior would finish the contest with seven rebounds, a block, and a steal. She would only be surpassed on the boards by Kiana Rios, who would record a double-double with 11 rebounds and an equal amount of points. The Saints would hold on to their double-digit lead for the final half of the contest until the final couple of minutes, where the Falcons would cut the lead to eight, but a series of clutch free throws would extend the lead to 15 points as SMU would claim the 78-63 victory. Avery Oaster would record 13 points as another option in the paint and would go a perfect 5-5 from the free-throw line. Madelyn Brown would be the glue of the unit during the contest, contributing a team-high seven assists and grabbing three rebounds.

Head Coach Natalie Marlowe thought the team had an outstanding showing with their efficiency, and noted Lamet's career performance as one that stood out:

"23 assists on 28 made baskets has to be my favorite stat of the year. Sarah Lamet was huge for us. Her presence in our defense and her efficient offensive performance was the spark we needed as a team. When we share the ball, we're hard to stop. I'm really proud of the response we had and hoping we can carry that effort into the last few weeks of the season."

SMU Women's Basketball will be back in action on Saturday, February 15th, as they take on Western Oregon in Monmouth at 2:00 PM PST. You can get tickets here.
