LACEY, WA — Saint Martin's Women's Basketball (18-11, sixth seed GNAC) faced the Alaska Anchorage Seawolves on Saturday in the program's first-ever GNAC Championship Game appearance after taking down CWU and MSUB in the days prior.
The Saints and Seawolves traded scores early on as both teams claimed leads in the first period.
Kiana Rios would kick things off for Saint Martin's in what was be a team-leading performance on offense, contributing 16 points, three assists, two boards, and a steal. Her run through the GNAC tournament was notable, as she was also named to the All-Tournament Team by the GNAC following the contest.
Jada Travis followed closely behind with 10 points of her own and two assists. More Saints got involved as
Avery Oaster was the main force in the paint with 12 points and a team-leading five rebounds and was complimented by
Sarah Lamet's six added points. Even with the early production, Alaska Anchorage continued to have answers for SMU's scoring efforts. UAA would take a two-point lead into the second period and would begin to outpace the Saints to distance themselves on the scoreboard. The Seawolves took their momentum to halftime with a nine-point lead over the Saints, 43-34.
Kasey Booster got the Saints started in the second half with a three-point basket en route to a 10-point scoring performance, including 2-4 (50%) shooting from beyond the arc.
Iternite Reed,
Keeli Jade Smith, and
Madelyn Brown led the defensive efforts, clamping down UAA as the third period rolled. SMU cut the lead to just a couple possessions, but Alaska Anchorage found their stride towards the end of the period. The deficit for Saint Martin's would carry into the final 10 minutes, where the Seawolves would hold their double-digit lead until the end of the contest. Alaska Anchorage defeated Saint Martin's by a score of 75-59, claiming both regular-season and tournament GNAC Championships. There was still a chance that SMU would to make it into the Division II National Tournament with their blazing end to the regular season, but the program ultimately did not get an at-large bid. Even so, the Saints had an incredible run in their 2024-25 campaign.
SMU Women's Basketball ended their season 18-11 with a 9-9 GNAC record, with wins over top-tier opponents throughout the season.
Jada Travis and
Kiana Rios were named to the All-GNAC Second Team, with Travis also being tabbed the conference's Freshman of the Year. The Saints look forward to their 2025-26 campaign.
