Softball Picks Up Convincing Non-Conference Wins Over Simon Fraser

SMU Softball faced Simon Fraser on Friday, February 28th, and won both contests in the doubleheader.

BURNABY, BRITISH COLUMBIA — Saint Martin's Softball (8-4) faced Simon Fraser in a two-game series that did not count towards conference records.

The Saints got rolling in the first game and initiated their scoring in the third inning thanks to a home run from Heather Ebner. The home run energized the team and they continued their momentum with three more runs scored in the fifth frame and one in the sixth. Key contributions included Shelby Lawson, who nailed an RBI-single in the sixth inning, and Jules Detrinidad, who had a two-RBI blast in the fifth. Pitcher Chloe Leverington delivered a strong performance, completing 6.2 innings while allowing only one run and striking out five, improving her season record to 5-0. The Saints would hold off the Red Leaf surge and win the first contest, 6-2.

To start off the second game, Lawson initiated the scoring with a solo home run down the left field line, giving the Saints an early 1-0 lead. Elissa Dewees extended the lead with an RBI-single to center field and would then reach home thanks to an Analise Griffiths double to right center. Ebner reached base on a dropped fly by the left fielder, allowing Griffiths and Ashley Goodale to score, bringing the score to 4-0. Simon Fraser would put up a couple of runs, but Kaylee Walker got the Saints a fifth run with an RBI single, increasing SMU's lead to 5-2. In the sixth inning, Detrinidad would hit a home run over the fence, getting herself and Lawson across home plate to surge to a 7-3 lead. The offense would continue to roll as the game closed, with multiple Saints chiming in with scores and claiming the victory, 13-3.

Head Coach Jim Peterson had a couple of quick thoughts on the short series:

"Our pitching staff threw very well over the weekend and we had timely hitting throughout the lineup to get two wins."

SMU Softball will be back in action this weekend for their home opener, which has been moved from Saturday and Sunday to Friday, March 7th and Saturday, March 8th, with both doubleheaders starting at noon. You can learn more about upcoming contests here.
