LACEY, WA — The Saint Martins Softball team (22-9, 7-4 GNAC) hosted Montana State Billings at the SMU Softball Field this past weekend. The Saints claimed three wins over the Yellowjackets which catapulted them to second place in Great Northwest Athletic Conference softball rankings.
On Saturday, the Saints opened the weekend with a big win, dominating the Yellowjackets 9-0. Shelby Lawson led the offense in RBIs with a single in the first inning and an inside-the-park home run in the second. The Saints' defense held the Yellowjackets to just one hit, with senior pitcher Chloe Leverington picking up her 14th win of the season in a dominating five-inning shutout performance. The second game of the day began with the Yellowjackets taking an early lead in the second inning. By the bottom of the second, MSUB held a 3-0 lead over the Saints. At the bottom of the second, Lawson scored off of an RBI single by Kekai Schultz. After a scoreless fourth inning, the Saints would regain the lead after Elissa Dewees hit a 2 RBI double. The Saints' defense would hold the Yellowjackets from scoring the rest of the game. Saint Martin's would earn their second win of the day 9-3 over MSUB.
On the second day of the series, the Saints would play one full game before canceling the second due to weather conditions. Haley Agena would get a hit to bring Ashley Goodale home to get the scoring effort started early. Shortly after, Lawson would score on an error by the MSUB defense, bringing the Saints to a 2-0 lead. Lawson would score for a second time in the bottom of the fifth to extend the lead further. Montana State Billings would not go down without a fight, scoring twice in the fifth inning and adding another run in the seventh inning, eventually tying the game 3-3. Going into the bottom of the seventh, SMU was looking to score and close out the game. Agena would reach first on an error by MSUB before being moved to second by the sacrifice bunt from Schultz, and shortly after, Amanda Peterson would close out the game by bringing home Agena with a knock into left-center field. The Saints would take the third win over the Yellowjackets 4-3, concluding the series with a close win, moving to 7-4 overall in GNAC play.
Leverington received GNAC Pitcher of the Week honors after her stellar performance across 12 innings this weekend. She currently leads the conference in wins and boasts a 15-1 record this season. You can read the GNAC's official release here.
