Softball Ends Season at NCAA West Regional With Loss to Biola

SMU Softball lost an elimination game against the Biola Eagles on Friday, May 9th, 4-3.

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. — The Saint Martin's Softball team (32-16) faced the sixth-seeded Biola Eagles in an elimination game in the 2025 NCAA Division II West Regional Tournament to close their season.

The Saints and Eagles would trade scoreless frames in the first inning, with SMU led on the mound by Bridget Johnson through four innings. Biola would crack the game open in the second inning due to a throwing error on SMU's defense, but a steady trickle of solo scores across the next few innings from Shelby Lawson, Ava Heston, and Haley Agena would give the Saints a 3-2 lead heading into the bottom of the fifth. Biola would strike back to tie the game in the fifth inning, and a single through the left side would give them a 4-3 lead over Saint Martin's heading into the final frame. Heather Ebner would be walked and Lawson would be hit by a pitch to set up a runner in scoring position, but the Biola defense would shut down a rally with a pop-up and ground-out. The Saints would fall short, 4-3, in an impressive effort against one of the West Coast's top teams.

In the team's final effort of 2025, Agena and Ebner would lead the team with two hits each, while Lawson, Heston, and Kaylee Walker would all record one apiece. Amanda Peterson would see the mound for 2.0 innings of relief, only giving up one earned run through ten batters.

Following tournament play, Heather Ebner would be named a First Team All-American by both the NFCA and CCA for her efforts this season. The two honors add to the sophomore's already-impressive collegiate career, which included a GNAC Co-Player of the Year award just a couple of weeks prior. The team will look towards next season with an impressive incoming class and a lot of returning experience.
