MONMOUTH, Ore. — The Saint Martin's Women's Basketball team was victorious 49-39 against Western Oregon on Saturday,
The game was a low-scoring grudge match, but the Saints capitalized on a 39-30 team rebounding advantage and a stifling defensive effort to come away with a 10-point GNAC road victory. The win improved the Saints' record 10-6 overall and 6-1 in GNAC play.
How It Happened
First Quarter
- The Saints fell behind 7-2 to start the game, but capped off the quarter with a 8-2 run that flipped the script and gave Saint Martin's an early advantage.
- Jada Travis and Avery Oaster scored four points each in the first.
Second Quarter
- Within the first minute of the second quarter, Harper Wagner hit a jumper and Jada Travis hit a three-pointer to put Saint Martin's up 15-7 with 9:05 on the clock.
- In another low-scoring quarter, a jumper by Laiken Hill snapped a nearly three-minute scoreless streak to put the Saints up 20-10 with 1:44 left in the first half. Western Oregon hit a three-pointer in the final minute of the half, trimming the Saint Martin's lead to 20-13 at the halftime break.
Third Quarter
- Saint Martin's pushed ahead by 11 (26-15) with 6:18 on the clock, but the Wolves responded with a 9-0 run the trimmed the Saints' lead to 26-24 with 1:43 on the clock.
- The Saints added free-throws down the stretch and led 29-26 heading into the fourth quarter.
Fourth Quarter
- In the highest-scoring quarter of the game, the Saints out scored the Wolves 20-13 and shot 5-10 (50%) from the field.
- The Saints opened the quarter on a 10-0 run, with the first six points coming from Kiana Rios. The run pushed the Saints' lead to 39-26 with 4:49 left in regulation.
- Back-to-back three-pointers from Western Oregon ended the run and cut Saint Martin's lead to 39-32 with 3:43 left in regulation.
- The Wolves came as close as six points with 1:25 left in the game, but the Saints went 6-6 on free-throws down the stretch to pull away and win 49-39.
Top Performers
- Three Saints finished in double-figures, led by Jada Travis with 15 points. She shot 6-8 from the free-throw line and added two assists and two steals.
- Kiana Rios totaled 12 points and seven rebounds.
- Avery Oaster scored 10 points and added five rebounds and three blocks.
Team Stat of the Game
- The Saints limited the Wolves to 28.8% from the field, the second lowest opponent field goal percentage in a game this season for Saint Martin's.
