Saints fall short at Northwest Nazarene

NAMPA, Idaho — The Saint Martin's Women's Basketball team lost its road matchup at Northwest Nazarene 83-73 on Saturday, January 24.

After falling behind by double figures, the Saints fought back with a huge rally late in the third quarter to come back within one point, but the Nighthawks pulled away in the fourth quarter. The loss dropped the Saints' record to 10-8 overall and 6-3 in GNAC play.

How It Happened
First quarter

  • The first quarter was neck-and-neck, as Northwest Nazarene held a narrow 11-10 lead after the first frame.
  • The Saints opened the game on a 6-0 run, but the Nighthawks later went on an 8-2 run to lead by one heading into the second quarter.

Second quarter

  • Both teams saw their offensive efficiency pick up in the second quarter, with the Saints shooting 40% from the field. However, Northwest Nazarene shot 55.6% from the field and out scored the Saints 28-21 in a high-scoring period to take a 39-31 lead into halftime.
  • Saint Martin's trailed by four points (28-24) with 3:13 remaining in the half, before the Nighthawks pulled away to lead by eight heading into the break.

Third quarter

  • It appeared that the Nighthawks were beginning to pull away in the third quarter, taking a 48-35 lead over the Saints with 3:47 on the clock. However, the Saints ended the quarter on a massive 12-2 run that trimmed the deficit to 50-47 heading into the final frame. Laiken Hill scored eight out of the 12 points during the run, two of which came from three-pointers.

Fourth Quarter

  • The Saints' run continued into the fourth quarter, as a layup by Harper Wagner trimmed the deficit to 50-49 with 9:11 left in regulation.
  • The Nighthawks bounced back with a 6-0 run to pull back ahead 56-49 with 7:40 on the clock.
  • A layup by Kiana Rios with 6:16 on the clock trimmed the deficit to 56-53.
  • A 6-0 run in response by Northwest Nazarene pushed the Saints' deficit to 62-53 with 4:52 left in the game.
  • The Saints pulled within seven points down the final stretch, but Northwest Nazarene held off any last-minute comebacks and went on to win 83-73.

Top Performers

  • Jada Travis led the Saints with 20 points off 5-12 shooting from the field. She added five steals and three assists.
  • Harper Wagner totaled 10 points and seven rebounds.
