Women’s Basketball defeats Simon Fraser for eighth GNAC victory

LACEY, Wash. — The Saint Martin's Women's Basketball team was victorious 66-55 at home against Simon Fraser at Marcus Pavilion on Saturday, January 31.

After a neck-and-neck first half, the Saints picked up the pace with a highly efficient second half and out scored the Red Leafs 34-23 in the second half. The win improved the Saints' record to 12-8 overall and 8-4 in GNAC play.

How It Happened
First Quarter

  • The Saints built an 11-4 lead through the first five minutes, doing so off three three-pointers, two of which were made by Jada Travis.
  • Out of the media timeout, Travis hit another three-pointer to put the Saints up 14-4. 
  • Simon Fraser bounced back with a 7-0 run to trim the lead to 14-11 with 3:08 on the clock.
  • Saint Martin's pulled ahead 19-12, before Simon Fraser trimmed the Saints' lead to 19-17 heading into the second quarter.

Second Quarter

  • The score was neck-and-neck at 23-22 Saints with 7:29 on the clock, before a 6-0 run saw Saint Martin's pull ahead 31-22 with 3:20 left in the half.
  • The Red Leafs responded with a 9-1 run to push the score back to 32-31 Saints heading into halftime. Jada Travis led the Saints with 15 first-half points.

Third Quarter

  • The Saints started the second half on a 7-1 run, taking a 39-32 lead with 6:59 on the clock.
  • The teams exchanged a flurry of consecutive three-pointers midway through, as the Saints led 44-40 at the media timeout.
  • After the game was tied at 44-44, the Saints took a 46-44 lead at the 2:09 mark, a score that held through the end of the third frame.

Fourth Quarter

  • The Saints opened the fourth quarter on a 7-0 run, part of a bigger 9-0 run that saw Saint Martin's jump ahead 53-44, prompting a timeout by Simon Fraser at the 53-44 mark.
  • After the timeout, Jada Travis hit a three-pointer at the seven-minute mark to help the Saints take a controlling 56-44 advantage.
  • The Saints held a double-digit lead through the remainder of the fourth quarter, going on to win 66-55.

  • Jada Travis put together her second-highest scoring effort of the season, scoring 27 points off 9-18 shooting and a 5-10 clip from three-point range. She added two rebounds and two assists.
  • Avery Oaster totaled 13 points, nine rebounds, three steals, three assists, and two blocks.
  • Laiken Hill tallied 10 points and five rebounds.
