ANCHORAGE, Alaska — The Saint Martin's Women's Basketball team secured its second-most GNAC wins in a season in program history on Saturday, February 28, defeating Alaska Anchorage 66-51.
Four Saints scored in double figures in the win, as Saint Martin's limited Alaska Anchorage to 25.8% shooting from the field. The win capped off an 18-9 regular season in which the team went 14-4 in GNAC play, the second most GNAC wins in a season in program history, and the best since the 2004-05 season.
Head Coach Natalie Marlowe notched her 29th career GNAC victory, moving her to second all-time in career GNAC wins by a Saint Martin's women's basketball head coach.
How It Happened
First Quarter
- The Saints stifled the Seawolves defensively in the first quarter, limiting Alaska Anchorage to 3-20 (15%) from the field. Saint Martin's shot an efficient 6-12 (50%) and built up an 18-10 lead.
- The Saints held a 7-6 lead midway through the frame, before ending the quarter on an 11-4 run. Avery Oaster scored three consecutive baskets to close out the frame.
Second Quarter
- Avery Oaster led all players with 11 points in the first half, while adding 10 rebounds for a first-half double-double.
- The Saints once again limited the Seawolves' offensive efforts, holding Anchorage to 2-13 (15.4%) in the second quarter.
- The Saints held a narrow 22-16 lead at the 6:09 mark, before erupting for a 9-1 run to close out the first half, carrying a 31-17 lead into the break.
Third Quarter
- Saint Martin's out-scored Alaska Anchorage 18-11 in the third quarter, building up a 49-28 lead heading into the final frame.
- A three-pointer by Kiana Rios at the 7:57 mark put the Saints ahead 39-19.
- Later in the quarter, a jumper by Jada Travis capped off a 7-0 run and gave the Saints a 25-point lead (49-24) with 3:11 left in the quarter.
Fourth Quarter
- The Seawolves saw their best shooting quarter in the final frame (47.4%), but the Saints' steady lead held through the final whistle of a 15-point victory.
- A pair of free-throws by Karyss Lacanlale at the 7:07 mark put the Saints ahead by 30 points (60-30).
- Anchorage responded with a 16-0 run to trim the Saint's lead to 60-46 with 3:02 left in regulation, but the Saints went 4-4 at the free-throw line down the stretch and carried out a 66-51 victory.
