SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. — The Saint Martin's Volleyball team won its match against Vanguard in five sets on Friday, August 28 in San Bernardino, California on day two of the CSUSB Yotes Classic Showcase.
The Saints trailed after the first set and later trailed two sets to one, but bounced back with big efforts in the fourth and fifth sets to win the match in five sets. The victory improved the Saints' record to 2-1 on the season.
How It Happened
- The match started off even, as the Saints and Lions played out an early 11-11 tie. An ensuing 4-0 run by Vanguard put Saint Martin's behind by a small margin, which would ultimately last for the remainder of the frame. The Saints pulled within 15-18 late in the set, but Vanguard embarked on a 7-2 run to win 25-17.
- The Saints jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second set, but Vanguard pushed ahead 12-11 midway through. A big 6-2 run by the Saints put Saint Martin's up 18-13. Despite Vanguard pushing back within one point (20-19), Saint Martin's pulled away and won the second set 25-21 to tie the match at 1-1.
- Vanguard hit .280 in the third set, as an early 5-5 tie later turned into a 13-7 deficit for Saint Martin's. The Lions closed out the set on a 10-3 run to win 25-14 and take a 2-1 advantage.
- Saint Martin's bounced back big in the fourth set, hitting .308 and winning 25-16 to force a fifth set. The Saints saw four aces during the frame, as an early 6-6 tie later saw Saint Martin's leading 15-12 midway through. A 4-1 run by the Saints and a 6-1 run to close out the set helped the Saints pull away and win 25-16; a service ace by Sophie Fast ended the set for the Saints.
- In the fifth set, the Saints held a narrow 4-3 lead, before erupting for a match-altering 10-0 run — five of the 10 points came off aces from Emily Garten as the Saints built an emphatic 14-3 lead. After Vanguard scored a point, a service ace by the Lions gave the Saints a 15-4 win in the fifth set to take the match 3-2.
