MONMOUTH, Ore. — The Saint Martin's Volleyball team was defeated in five sets in its GNAC opener at Western Oregon on Saturday, September 12.
The Saints held an early 1-0 lead, and bounced back from down 2-1 to force a fifth set, but ultimately fell in a close final set. The loss dropped the Saints' record to 4-5 on the year.
How It Happened
- The Saints hit .204 as a team in the first set and totaled 15 kills, as Saint Martin's came back from down 9-6 to later tie the game at 13-13. Saint Martin's built a narrow lead, and a 4-0 put the team up 18-15. The Saints held the lead down the stretch and a kill by Hanna Ligons cemented a 25-23 first-set victory.
- Western Oregon bounced back with a .367 hitting percentage in the second set and rode a 9-0 run to pull ahead 13-4. The Saints pulled within four points midway through the frame, but the Wolves ran off with a 25-17 victory to even the match at 1-1.
- The third set saw Western Oregon hold a sizable advantage in hitting percentage again, as the Saints were defeated 25-15. Saint Martin's trailed 11-10 midway through, but the Wolves closed out the frame on a 9-3 run to take a 2-1 lead in the match.
- In the fourth set, Saint Martin's bounced back with a 16-11 advantage in kills and a .262 team hitting percentage. The Saints trailed 6-9 early, but later evened the frame at 12-12. A 6-1 run by the Saints and another 5-1 run to close the set gave Saint Martin's a 25-20 fourth-set victory and forced a fifth set.
- In the fifth set, the Saints jumped out to a 6-2 lead early on. The Wolves bounced back with a 7-0 run of their own. Saint Martin's trailed 8-9 midway through, but never came any closer as Western Oregon pulled away to win 15-12.
