HONOLULU, Hawaii — The Saint Martin's Volleyball team lost its match at Chaminade in five sets on Thursday, September 3
After trailing two sets to none, Saint Martin's rallied from behind to force a fifth set, but ultimately Chaminade prevailed in the final frame to win 3-2. The loss dropped the Saints' record to 2-3 on the season.
How It Happened
- Chaminade came out strong in the first set and defeated the Saints 25-15, behind a 12-5 advantage in kills. The Swords built up an early 9-2 advantage — the Saints came within five later in the set, but Chaminade ran off with a 25-15 win.
- The Saints improved their hitting percentage significantly in the second half, but an early run by Chaminade saw Saint Martin's fall behind 12-6. The Swords led by as much as eight points in the set and the Saints came as close as five points down the stretch, but fell by a final score of 25-19 to fall behind two sets to none.
- Saint Martin's hit .308 as a team in the third set and recorded 16 kills. The set was neck-and-neck, as the teams played out a 10-10 tie midway through. A 7-1 run by the Saints put Saint Martin's ahead 20-14 late in the set — the Saints held off any late rallies and carried out a 25-21 victory to force a fourth set.
- The Saints rallied in the fourth set and hit .308 as a team in the fourth set. Saint Martin's pushed ahead 13-7 early on, before the set moved to a 15-15 tie. Saint Martin's trailed 21-20 late in the frame, but forced a 24-24 tie later in the set. Consecutive attack errors by the Swords allowed the Saints to take a 26-24 victory in the fourth set.
- In the fifth set, Chaminade pushed ahead 7-3 early on, behind a 5-1 run. The Saints pushed within 5-7, but a 5-2 run by the Swords put the home team ahead 12-7. Saint Martin's rallied two points on match point, but Chaminade went on to win 15-11 to take the match.
