Nampa, ID –
Conner Biggs and
Vlad Voin picked up one goal each to lead the Saints to a 2-1 win over Northwest Nazarene and give Saint Martin's its first-ever GNAC team title in any sport Saturday afternoon at the NNU Soccer Field.
Biggs started things off early finding the back of the net just one minute and 20 seconds into the game.
Ruben Orozco served it up to Biggs who blasted a shot inside the far post for his fifth goal of the season.
"This was a very hard fought game," said head coach
Rob Walker. "The opening goal by Conner was a big lift for us."
It would stay 1-0 going into the break but the Crusaders tied it in the 59
th minute as Nate Hamm scored off a corner from Sal Sanchez.
"NNU played well and was dangerous on the counter but we made adjustments," said Walker.
With 15 minutes to play, Voin got the ball out wide from Orozco at the corner of the 18, cut past a defender and sent it past the goalie for the game-winner.
Though the Crusaders outshot the Saints 14-9 they couldn't connect. Northwest Nazarene had nine shots on goal but SMU keeper
Zac Lubin made eight saves for the Saints. Cesar Lira had just one save for NNU.
"The story in the second half was the goalkeeping of Zac," said Walker. "He did an outstanding job; maybe one of his best games in our program and he's had some good games."
The Saints now have 18 points in conference play and cannot be caught by any team, giving them the title outright.
The Saints, now 6-1 in the GNAC and 11-6 overall, will finish out their season with a trip to Western Washington University on Thursday, November 5.
