MONMOUTH, Ore. – In a neutral site game at the New PE Building hosted by Western Oregon, the Saint Martin's University men's basketball team defeated Cal State Monterey Bay 90-83 Saturday night.
This is the second win for SMU, who is now 2-2 overall on the season, while the Otters fall to 0-4 on the season.
SMU was led by
Cole Preston, who had 19 points,
Isaac Bianchini recorded 18 points,
Tyler Copp added 14 points,
Brandon Kenilvort had 11 points, and
Jordan Kitchen recorded 10 points.
Rhett Baerlocher led on the boards with five.
"This was a team win-a total team effort from start to finish," said head coach Alex Pribble. "We've been dealing with some injuries lately, so guys stepped up, some played big minutes, and found a way to get the job done."
The Otters were led by Ryan Nitz, who had 28 points, Evan Zeller recorded 16 points.
The Saints shot 53.3 percent from the floor, 66.7 percent from the 3-point line and 90.9 percent, 30-of-33, from the free throw line.
SMU came on out of the gate and scored the first five points and never lost the lead to Monterey Bay. The Saints had the largest lead in the first half of 11 after Bianchini, who was four-of-four on threes, hit a three. Saint Martin's went into the half with a 10-point lead at 37-27.
Coming out of the half, SMU went on a 5-0 run with a three by Copp and layup by
Fred Jorg and SMU had the 42-27 lead with 18:22 left in the game. That was the Saints largest lead in the game.
With 3:35 left in the game, Monterey Bay came within five but a three from Copp and free throws by Kenilvort kept the Saints with the lead. The last 20 of 23 points from SMU came off free throw shots as the Otters started to foul with 13:10 left in the game.
"This was a great experience for our guys to go through early in the year, learning to execute down the stretch, learning to make defensive adjustments late in the game," said Pribble.
"We are very happy with the win, but this continues to be about the learning process for us," added Pribble. "Our guys are learning what it takes to compete at this level."
Saint Martin's is back in action on Tuesday in Marcus Pavilion at 7 p.m. to see Hawaii Hilo.
