Saints Wrap Up Home Season With Loss To Montana State Billings –The Saints' Women's Soccer closed out their 2017 home schedule with a 4-1 loss to Montana State Billings, in a rainy and windy match at the SMU Soccer Field. Montana State Billings struck first in the match, scoring on a kick from roughly 25 yards out, bending around the far post. The Yellowjackets extended their lead over the Saints in the 39th minute when a shot from 20 yards out, in the middle of the field, found its way over the outstretched hands of
Sara Christensen. Billings benefited from an own goal committed by the Saints in the 41st minute to take a 3-0 lead into halftime. The Saints' offense applied pressure in the second half, opening the half with a shot on goal from
Amber Burbridge, followed by a corner from
Madison Walker in the 61st minute. The senior
Lauren Allison attempted two shots that were blocked in the 68th and 71st minute before the Saints broke through the Yellowjackets' defense in the 73rd minute. A fellow senior,
Dulce Armas, stepped into a shot from 20 yards out, tucking the ball inside the far post for her first goal in a Saints uniform to bring SMU within two. Saint Martin's looked to further cut into the lead with a corner piece in the final seconds of the 80th minute, resulting in a shot from Burbridge that was blocked by the Yellowjackets. MSUB worked the ball down the pitch and sealed the victory with a goal in the 84th minute on a ball from 35 yards out in the middle of the field.
Lauren Allison finished the match with four shots, to lead all Saints, while
Dulce Armas recorded two shots, both coming on goal with one resulting in a goal.
Brittany Orlosky and Burbridge each took two shots, with one landing on target.
Jade Castaneda and Kiersten combined for two shots.
Sara Christensen went all 90 minutes at goalkeeper for SMU, making four saves on 12 shots faced while allowing four goals.
Overtime Golden Goal Lifts Saints To Win Over Western Oregon –After falling behind early, the Saints fought back and sent the match into overtime with a goal from
Dulce Armas before
Kiersten Madsen's golden goal clinched the 2-1 victory over Western Oregon on Saturday. Western Oregon capitalized on an early opportunity, after a shot from 15 yards out, bounced away from
Ali Koehler, and Dacia Alexander connected on the rebound shot. Her first goal of the season. Western Oregon continued to apply pressure against the Saints, firing off four corner kicks and six shots, two of which were saved by Koehler, in the remainder of the first half. The Saints first and only shot of the half came in the 40th minute from
Kiersten Madsen, which landed on target. Koehler continued to fight off Western Oregon's chances, making three saves in the second half to keep the score at 1-0.
Brittany Orlosky took the second shot for SMU in the 76th minute, landing on goal but saved by the Wolves.
Lauren Allison attempted to equalize in the 83rd minute before
Dulce Armas found the net in the 84th minute on a shot from 20 yards, that went over the Wolves keeper. In the first overtime period, the Saints took the only shot of the period, coming in the 94th minute. The Saints were awarded a free-kick 30 yards out, with
Madison Walker taking the kick. Walker found
Amber Burbridge, who tapped the ball to an open
Kiersten Madsen who scored her second goal of the season to end the match in a 2-1 victory for SMU. "It was brutal conditions but we showed amazing grit and fight to work through them without excuses today," said head coach
Heather Cato. "Hats off to Dulce (Armas) and
Kiersten Madsen on two great finishes and Amber's (Burbridge) determination to keep the ball alive on the second goal. It was a team effort that we used to grind out the overtime win. We are very proud of the team's performance today and are looking to wrap up the season next week with a strong finish." The Saints only took six shots in the game; however, all six came on goal with Armas and Madsen connecting for goals in the 83rd and 94th minute respectively.
Ali Koehler played all 94 minutes at goalkeeper, allowing one goal while making six saves on 11 shots faced.
Simon Fraser Preview – The Clan enter match after falling to Concordia in a 1-0 match and hold a 6-8 record overall while 4-6 in conference action. SFU defeated the Saints 5-0 down in Lacey on September 28. SFU is lead largely by Emma Pringle, who in 14 matches has scored 12 goals with one assist for 25 total points. Pringle leads the team in shots with 47 and shot percentage at .255. Three other SFU players have each scored at least two goals this season, including Christina Dickson with four goals. Jenna Baxter, with one goal, leads the team with 11 assists. Playing all but 24 minutes at goalkeeper this year has been number 99 Priya Sandhu. Sandhu, in 1,252 minutes of action, has recorded 54 saves while allowing 26 goals for a save percentage of .675. She holds a record of 6-8-0 with two of her wins coming from a shutout. As a team, Simon Fraser has outscored their opponents in the first half to a tune of 11-7 before being outscored 19-13 in the second 45 minutes. SFU has one goal in overtime, coming in the second overtime. They have been outshot 178-162, and in saves 67-56 by their opponents.
Northwest Nazarene Preview – The newly named Nighthawks enter the match on a two-game winning streak, including winners of four of their last five matches. The Saints final match of the season will be their first meeting with Northwest Nazarene this season. The Nighthawks feature a balanced attack with four players scoring at least three or more goals on the season. Madi Taylor and Rikki Myers have each scored five goals on the year and have combined for five assists and 25 points. NNU is led by of the most dominate goalkeepers in the conference in Daniele Ortiz. In 12 matches, Ortiz has allowed only nine goals while making 44 saves for a .830 save percentage. Opponents are averaging 0.74 goals per match against her. Ortiz is 8-4-0 on the season with seven shutouts recorded. The Nighthawks have outscored their opponents (22-12) and outshot them (153-131).
GNAC Review – Western Washington continues their perfect season with a 10-0-0 record in conference for 30 points. Concordia remains undefeated in conference action at 9-0-1 with 28 points and will face off against WWU in the final match of the regular season on Saturday. Northwest Nazarene and Seattle Pacific are locked in for third with 21 points while Simon Fraser takes fifth at 12 points in 10 matches. Montana State Billings (8) holds a one point lead over the Saints (7) with Western Oregon (5) and Central Washington (2) wrap up the standings.
