Last Minute Goal Lifts Simon Fraser Over Saints – After an equalizer from Brandon Madsen, who broke the single-season goal record, Simon Fraser squeezed by the Saints with a goal in the 77th minute in the pouring rain on Saturday. Saint Martin's dominated the early goings of the match, holding Simon Fraser to no shots until 38 minutes into the match, while the Saints fired off the first six shots of the game. The fifth shot came from Kyle Witzel who headed the ball on a play from
Sebastian Navarro, 10 yards out straight to the keeper. Miguel Hof of Simon Fraser was unable to control the ball, letting the ball bounce back to Witzel who connected for a high shot and his fourth goal of the season. The Clan's offense, who averaged over 16 shots per match entering the week, failed to gain any edge over the Saints' defense until their first shot in the 38th minute of the half. After a corner and shot on goal for Simon Fraser, which was saved by Griffin Small, the Clan was awarded a penalty kick after a SMU foul in the box. Matteo Polisi capitalized on the opportunity and tied the match at 1-1, which the score remained entering halftime. Simon Fraser took the lead in the 64th minute after a cross from the near side connected with an open Dzenan Bezdrob for his second goal of the season. The Saints nearly tied the match in the 67th minute when a shot from Alexis Lopez was saved by Simon Fraser, but bounced to Edgar Iniguez, who's shot was saved by Hof. SMU equalized the match in the 74th minute when a Navarro cross found a diving Brandon Madsen for his 12th goal of the season. Madsen's goal broke the school record of most goals in a single-season which was set by his teammate Kyle Witzel last season. Simon Fraser answered quickly, in the 77th minute, with the game-winning goal by Polisi, his 10th of the season on a shot 15 yards out. "In order to win, there is a process that involves our team needing to be dynamic," said head coach
Rob Walker. "We were a moment or two away from winning today against the best team in our conference. SFU is a well-coached and classy side. Our guys brought forward a sound game plan and executed their jobs today. Individually, we are proud of guys today, who turned a winning performance on Thursday to what was almost a winning result today. Kyle Witzel's goal was the result of some great work from
Sebastian Navarro and Brandon Madsen's goal was a real show of his class as he set's our all-time record for goals scored in a season." Witzel led the Saints with five shots on the day, three coming on goal including his goal in the 34th minute. Madsen's lone attempt of the night, proved to be effective, scoring in the 74th minute. Iniguez and Navarro each tallied two shots and combined for three shots on goal. Small got the start at goalkeeper, going all 90 minutes, making three saves while allowing four goals on 12 shots faced.
Falcons Edged Out Saints In Road Match – A second half comeback attempt, focused around Jose Marquez's goal, fell short as the Saints fell 3-1 on the road to Seattle Pacific. The Saints' first attempt to get on the board came in the 9th minute when McKray Kohn's shot missed wide left. Seattle Pacific connected on their second shot of the match, when cross into the box, found Gabriel Weber for the Falcons first goal of the match in the 9th minute. The Falcons struck again in the 16th minute off a cross to the far post, reaching the head of Jose Benavides for the second goal of the match. The final blow of the half came in the 39th minute when multiple passes eventually found an open Travis Swallow to put SPU up 3-0. The Saints only attempted one more shot in the first half;
Sebastian Navarro landed his shot in 14th minute on goal before being saved. Saint Martin's did not wait long to strike back in the second half. Only 59 seconds into the half, Navarro, who leads the conference in assists, found Marquez on a free kick, with Marquez completing the shot with a header into the near post. Navarro tied Vlad Voin's school record for most assists in a single season with eight, set back in 2009. Griffin Small, who started at goalkeeper, put together a clean half, making three saves on eight shots faced in the second half. Behind Small and the Saints' defense, SMU looked to continue their second half comeback. Steven Chu, Kyle Witzel, and Brandon Madsen each fired off shots; however, none connected for goals as the Falcons held on to the 3-1 victory. "The boys were disappointed about the first half," said head coach
Rob Walker. "Credit SPU for doing a good job pressing us and creating problems for us going forward. On the good news front, our start in the second half and our performance overall was something to hang your hat on. We had a free kick called back, a shot for
Sebastian Navarro go off the post and a great turn from Brandon Madsen. Finally, Griffin Small's goalkeeping was good throughout the game; especially strong in the second half which we needed as we made a push." Chu provided a spark off the bench, leading the team with three shots, with two landing on target. Jose Marquez scored his first collegiate goal in the 46th minute on his only shot in the match.
