Saints Sweep Simon Fraser In Home Upset –Behind
Rebecca Mitchell's 21 kills and
Nicolette Nesbitt's 43 assists, the Saints broke the school record for most wins in a single season with nine as SMU upset Simon Fraser in straight sets (25-22, 26-24, 25-22) inside Marcus Pavilion. The Saints (9-16, 4-13) jumped out to an early 5-1 lead over Simon Fraser (13-12, 10-7) on multiple kills from Mitchell. The Clan responded to tie the match at 9-9 before kills by Mitchell and Larson along with a combo block for the two, gave SMU a 12-9 lead. Simon Fraser once again tied the match four more times in the following points, the latest being 19-19. Mitchell and Rachel Gondrezick combined for back-to-back kills, and a SFU attacking error put the Saints up three. After two points by the Clan, the Saints closed out the 25-22 set victory with two more kills by Gondrezick. The second set began with a gridlock, with both teams tied on the scoreboard at 7-7. Once again, Mitchell and Larson rattled off kills, followed by a combo block by the two to put SMU back on top at 10-7. After trading points through the next several serves, kills from Gondrezick, Mitchell, Larson and Kamille Langford extended the Saints' lead to five at 18-13. The Clan used a 6-2 run to knot the match at 21-21. Megan Vernoy's kill gave the Saints a 22-21 lead until Simon Fraser pushed the Saints to set point on a quick 3-1 run, at 24-23. The Saints rallied behind senior Mitchell, who connected for three set ending kills to put the Saints up 2-0 going into the set break. The Saints scored on the first three serves before Simon Fraser took the next four; then Larson and Gondrezick led the Saints back out front at 6-4. Simon Fraser took over the lead in the third set, stretching their to 13-10, the largest of the match. SMU responded back with seven unanswered points, highlighted by three
Hannah Neumann service aces and two Mitchell kills, to take a 17-13 lead. The Clan cut the Saints' lead to one on multiple occasions, including 21-20. Gondrezick answered the call, striking back-to-back kills, along with a combo block by Langford and Vernoy to put the Saints within one kill of winning the match. After a Clan sideout, Gondrezick ended the match with a kill, collecting the sweep and the Saints' first win over Simon Fraser since 2013.
Rebecca Mitchell led the match with 21 kills on 51 attempts for a .294 attacking percentage to go along with her 14 digs. Gondrezick finished second in the match with 17 kills on 37 attempts for a .351 attacking percentage.
Nicolette Nesbitt fueled the Saints' offense with 43 assists while
Hannah Neumann added three service aces, and 14 digs. Larson, Mitchell and Vernoy combined for nine blocks at the net. The Saints' victory marked their ninth victory of the season, breaking the school's NCAA D-II record for most wins in a single season.
Nationally Ranked Western Washington Handles Saints In Straight Sets – What marked the final time for four Saints' seniors inside Marcus Pavilion, No. 8 Western Washington defeated the Saints in straight sets (25-10, 25-17, 28-26). Western Washington (23-3, 17-1) and Saint Martin's (9-17, 4-14) began the match with a slight WWU edge at 5-4. Kills from Rachel Gondrezick and senior

The Saints offense struggled to find gaps in the Vikings defense with the set ending 25-10 in favor of Western Washington. The Saints responded well in the early goings of the second set, taking a 5-3 lead with kills from Gondrezick, senior
Rebecca Mitchell and Kamille Langford. Western Washington tied the match at 6-6 and proceeded to score six unanswered points to take a 12-6 lead. With the Saints trailing 20-10, Liz Larson started the run with a kill, followed by three straight kills by Mitchell. The Vikings closed out the 25-17 set with a kill and a 2-0 lead heading into the break. Saint Martin's continued their momentum into the final set; despite falling behind 6-2 in the early goings. The Saints cut the Vikings' lead to one before Western Washington extended to a 21-18 lead. A service ace by Clarice Buchanan and a kill by Gondrezick helped equalize the set at 21-21. Kills by Larson and Mitchell gave the Saints a 24-23, only one kill away from taking a set off the number eight team in the country. However, despite three set serves, the Saints were unable to close out the set and the Vikings sealed the 28-26 victory.
Rebecca Mitchell led all Saints with 18 kills along with 13 digs and a service ace. Gondrezick connected for 11 kills while Megan Vernoy provided four kills and a block.
Nicolette Nesbitt finished the match with 29 assists and 14 digs along with
Hannah Neumann's 14 digs.
Concordia Preview – The Cavaliers enter the match 12-13 overall and 7-11 in conference after dropping their last match. The Saints defeated Concordia in four sets in Marcus Pavilion back in September. CU is led by Lindsey Dorney, who leads the team with 335 kills and 3.56 kills per set. Dorsey also leads the team in service aces with 30 in 94 sets and is third in digs with 229 and second in blocks at 57 total. Michele Brown has complied a majority of assists with 872 total, and is averaging 10.26 assists per set. Allie Spear leads the Cavaliers with 323 digs, followed by Anna Dols at 296 digs. Colby Barnette has proven to be a force on the wall with 18 solo blocks and 111 total blocks, while ranking second in kills with 271. As a team, Concordia is average 12.8 kills per set, 12.1 assists per set, 1.3 aces per set, 16.1 digs per set and 2.0 blocks per set.
Western Oregon – The Wolves will host Seattle Pacific before the Saints come to town on Saturday, looking to avenge the 3-0 loss in September. In 89 sets, Alisha Bettinson leads the Wolves in kills with 314 total along with a .146 hitting percentage. Leila Holt and Maddie Mehciz share the setter role with 577 and 315 assists respectively. Mariella Vandenkooy provides the wall with eight solo and 29 assisted blocks for a total of 38 blocks. Bettinson has recorded a team leading 282 digs in the Wolves 25 matches for 3.17 digs per set. As a team, Western Oregon is average 11.9 kills per set, 11.3 assists per set, 1.2 aces per set, 17.8 digs per set and 1.4 blocks per set
GNAC Review – Setting up in the final week of the season will be the battle for the GNAC between Western Washington (17-1) and Northwest Nazarene (16-2). WWU rides a 16-match win streak into the week. The battle for third place will feature Central Washington (14-4) holding a one game lead over Alaska Anchorage (14-5). Simon Fraser (10-8) leads the middle of the conference over Seattle Pacific (8-10) and Concordia (7-11). Saint Martin's and Montana State Billings (4-14) remain tied for eighth with Alaska (4-15) and Western Oregon (2-16) rounding out the standings.
