PORTLAND, Ore. - The Saints' offense committed 33 attacking errors as the SMU fell in four sets (25-16, 23-25, 25-23, 25-16) to Concordia in GNAC road match on Thursday.
Concordia (13-13, 8-11) jumped out early over the Saints (9-18, 4-15) behind a 5-0 run to give them a 7-3 lead. Another 5-0 run, later in the set, extended the Cavaliers' lead before a third 5-0 run put them up 22-11. Kills from
Rebecca Mitchell and Rachel Gondrezick, along with a service ace from Mitchell trimmed the lead to seven before the set ultimately closed 25-16 in favor of Concordia.
Saint Martin's took advantage of kills by Gondrezick and Mitchell in the beginning of the second to lead 5-2. Concordia stormed back to reclaim an 8-7 lead before the Saints claimed six of the next seven points with four straight kills by Mitchell. The Cavaliers cut the lead to within one at 18-17 before the Saints rattled off three points with kills from Mitchell and Kamille Langford. The Cavaliers trimmed the lead to one two more times; however, two kills by Gondrezick and a combo block by Gondrezick and Liz Larson clinched the 25-23 set victory.
SMU, fueled by kills by three different Saints took the 7-6 lead in the third set before the Cavaliers pull ahead on a 7-1 run. Once again the Saints fought back to regain the lead at 19-16 with contributions by Gondrezick and Langford. The Cavaliers closed out the set on a 9-4 run to claim the set victory at 25-23.
In the final set, the Saints, highlighted by kills and blocks from Larson and Mitchell, gained the early 8-6 lead. The Cavaliers rattled off six straight points to claim a 12-6 lead. The Saints cut the score to one by earning four of the next five points before the Cavaliers' 10-2 run sealed the match at 25-16.
"Tonight we fought hard against a good Concordia team," said head coach
Jon Killingbeck. "We pretty much went blow for blow in the kill and dig category. What hurt us tonight is we had too many unforced errors. We have to take care of the ball a little better."
Leading the way was
Rebecca Mitchell with a match high 20 kills on 50 total attacks, along with seven digs and two blocks. Gondrezick recorded 13 kills while Liz Larson added five kills and a team leading five blocks.
Nicolette Nesbitt ended the match with 43 of the 44 assists for SMU while
Hannah Neumann and Clarice Buchanan combined for 29 digs.
The Saints travel south to Monmouth, Oregon for their final match of the 2017 season. The Saints will face Western Oregon on Saturday November 18 at 7:00 p.m. with live stats and video available on smusaints.com.
