Multi-Hit Game for Feist, Eskil Not Enough As Saints Fall 10-3

 

ST GEORGE, Utah - Despite a multi-hit game from Austin Feist and Adam Eskil, the Saints fell 10-3 to Dixie State University to close out their trip to Utah.

The Trailblazers (8-3) jumped out to an early lead after scoring two runs in the first and added one more in the second on a RBI double to left center.

SMU (0-3) got on the board in the top of fourth inning after Brandon Witherspoon led-off with a single down the left field foul line. Two batters later, with runners on second and third, Shaan Kothari drove in Witherspoon on a sacrifice fly to centerfield.

After the Trailblazers added one more run in the fifth, they broke open the lead with a three-run sixth inning highlighted by a single, double, single by their 9-1-2 hitters.

The Saints responded in the seventh inning by loading the bases on a Kothari double to left, and infield singles by Alec Hagerman and Isaac Hegamin. Feist grounded into a double-play scoring Kothari and left Hagerman on third. Eskil drove in the run on a single to center field to cut the lead to 7-3 after the top of the seventh.

Dixie State closed the door on a Saints' comeback by driving home three runs on two RBI singles and a sacrifice fly to centerfield. The Trailblazers extended their lead and eventually the winning the score to 10-3.

Freshman of the Year last year in the GNAC, Mickey Walker (0-1) got the start today but only managed to go 1.2 innings, giving up three runs on two hits, walking four and punching out two. Luke Hare finished the second inning, forcing a fly out. Tanner Inouye pitched 3.0 innings in relief, giving up one run on three hits and struck out one. Jacob Phipps pitched 1.0 innings, and gave up five runs. Zach Stevenson and Eskil pitched the final two innings.

Feist and Eskil both produced two hits along with one RBI and one walk in the middle of the Saints' order. Hagerman in the lead-off spot reached base once, and scored once. Witherspoon, Kothari, and Micah McNicoll each collected one hit and combined for two runs and drove in one.

As a team, SMU finished with three runs on 10 hits, three walks and only struck out twice.
