CALDWELL, Idaho – With two outs in the top of the ninth inning,
Austin Feist doubled home the eventual game-winning run as Saint Martin's University won 4-3 over College of Idaho at Wolfe Field.
The Saints (3-5) trailing 3-2, with the bases loaded,
Steven Sordahl tied the game on a double-play ball, and reached second on the play. Down to their final out, Feist doubled, bringing home Sordahl from second and completed the Saints' rally over the Yotes (7-10).
Both the Saints and the Yotes' bats remained quiet until the fifth inning when Feist drove in the first run of the game with a ground out to short, scoring
Alec Hagerman.
SMU added another run in the next inning on a RBI fielder's choice by
Ryan Colvin who plated
Trevor Young.
College of Idaho quickly responded with one run in the bottom halve of the sixth and eventually took the lead in the seventh with a RBI fielder's choice and go-ahead sacrifice fly.
Micah McNicoll led-off the ninth with a single to center field before pinch-hitter
Makana Aiona walked and Hagerman reached on a fielding error. With the bases loaded and nobody out, Sordahl reached base on a fielder's choice double-play; however, scored the tying the run. Feist came through in the clutch for the Saints with a double to win the game and series for SMU.
Reigning conference freshman of the year,
Mickey Walker got the start for the Saints, going 6.1 innings allowing two runs on five hits, walking none and striking out a season-high 11 Yotes.
Zach Stevenson closed out the final two outs of the seventh; giving up one run on a hit before
Patrick Hoeper (1-0) struck out all four batters he retired.
Benjamin Wadowski got his one batter to fly out and
Adam Eskil picked up his second save by striking out the final two batters.
