LACEY, Wash. – The Saint Martin's Women's Basketball season came to a conclusion on Saturday with a 62-56 loss to Concordia University despite a double-double by
Elin Johansson on senior night inside the Marcus Pavilion.
Mercedes Victor cut the Cavaliers' (12-16, 9-11 GNAC) lead to 59-56 on a lay-up with 2:14 left in the game; however, Concordia withstood the Saints' (5-23, 1-19) comeback for a 62-56 victory.
Both teams started the game at a gridlock, with the score remaining tied 5-5 until Concordia gained the edge on seven straight unanswered points. The Saints responded to close out the quarter on a 11-1 run to capture an 18-15 lead.
Baylee Olsen knocked down back-to-back 3-pointers to open up the second quarter, and gave SMU their largest lead (24-15) of the game. The Cavaliers slowly began chipping away at the score until a jumper from Erin Higbie knotted the game at 26-26 with 4:06 remained in the half. Two free throws by
Hannah Reynolds sent the Saints and Cavaliers locked at 30-30 into halftime.
Concordia began the second half on a 7-1 to establish control of the game. However, Saint Martin's made their comeback attempt as an 11-2, highlighted by a last second lay-up from
Emma Kennedy, gave the Saints a 46-45 advantage going into the final ten minutes.
Neither team gave an inch in the fourth quarter, the score changing leads three times in the first five minutes. Jordyn Peacock came through in the clutch for the Cavaliers, hitting two 3-pointers to extend the lead to 59-52 with 4:03 remaining. SMU managed to cut the score to 59-56 after baskets from Shelby Drey and Victor, but ultimately fell short 62-56.
"Give Concordia credit, they made the shots they needed to make down the stretch and we didn't" said head coach
Tim Healy. "I liked our effort tonight and wished we could have come out with a win, but it wasn't meant to be. I really like these kids, and I'm sorry they didn't get rewarded with more wins this year".
Johansson finished the season strong, leading the Saints in scoring with 16 points, rebounds with 12 and steals with 3. Senior Drey concluded with seven points on 3-5 shooting and collected seven rebounds.
Emma Kennedy came off the bench for a career-high 10 points, along with
Rebekah Baugh's seven and Olsen's six points.
As a team, SMU shot 18-54 (.333) from the field, 4-15 (.267) beyond the arc and 16-21 (.762) at the free throw line. The Saints tallied 41 total rebounds, 29 defensive, along with 10 assists, eight steals and three blocked shots.
