THE DALLES, Ore. - Saints' Baseball dropped both ends of a doubleheader to Montana State University-Billings, 3-2 and 6-3, at a neutral site in The Dalles, Oregon after the games were moved due to rain in Lacey, Washington.
Game One
Both starters quieted the opposing team's bats through the first three innings until a two-run homerun put the Yellowjackets (4-11, 2-3 GNAC) in the fourth inning.Â
The Saints (5-9, 2-4) responded the next inning after two walks and single from
Brandon Witherspoon loaded the bases for pinch-hitter
Trevor Young. Young connected on a ball for a single to center field, driving in
Zach Raczok and Kahi Hirano and knotting the game at 2-2 after five.
The game remained tied until the ninth and final inning when back-to-back wild pitches scored the Yellowjackets' runner on second, which gave them the 3-2 and the first victory in the doubleheader.Â
Aaron Shoup got the start on the mound for SMU, going five innings, allowing two runs on only three hits, walking three and striking out five.
Luke Hare was the first name out of the bullpen, pitching two hitless innings and striking out three Yellowjackets.
Patrick Hoeper retired two of the three batters he faced in the eighth before
Zach Stevenson (0-1) picked up his first loss of the season after hitting the eventual go-ahead batter and throwing two wild pitches.Â
Game Two
Montana State-Billings jumped out to the first lead of the ballgame again after capitalizing on a costly fielding error by the Saints, which led to six unearned runs and a hole too steep for SMU to climb out of. A hit batsmen, two walks and a two RBI double to left field capped off the six run inning.
Austin Feist looked to kick-start the Saints' offense, which until the sixth inning, had been held in check, with his first home run of the season, clearing the left field wall.
A seventh-inning rally began with a walk to Cameron Moiser, followed by a pop out, walk and a
Steven Sordahl single through the right side loaded the bases. After a pitching change, a wild pitch allowed every runner to advance 90-feet and Mosier to score the second run of the game. A critical strike out brought the Saints to within their final out before Feist's walk loaded the bases and brought the game-winning run to the plate in the form of Young. Young grounded to shortstop, who made the toss to second for the force out and stopped the Saints' late game rally.
Ryan Dorney (0-3) was tabbed as the starter, going 3.2 innings, giving up six runs, all unearned, on two hits, walking five and punching out six.
Jacob Phipps came in for relief going 1.1 innings, allowing one hit and striking out two before
Zach Stevenson pitched the final two shut-out innings.
