Saints Extend Win Streak To Seven Behind Nelson and Dettling

LACEY, Wash. - Saints' Softball extended their winning streak to seven games after completing a sweep of Montana State University-Billings, 7-0 and 13-3, behind a shut-out Kim Nelson performance and seven Mary Dettling RBIs at home.

Game One

Nelson (4-1), supplied by two three-run innings, pitched her best seven innings all season, only allowing five hits, no runs and struck out five Yellowjackets (9-16, 5-7 GNAC) as the Saints (8-2, 4-0) recorded their second shutout of the 2017 season.

A RBI single by Corrie Wilson to right field, scoring Sabrina Hicks, got the Saints on the board in the second inning with a 1-0 lead.

With runners on the corner in the third inning, Hicks stole second; however, nobody was covering second to grab the catcher's throw, allowing the ball to skip into center field and Lindsay Miller to come home for the second run of the game. Nelson proceeded to clear the bases with a moon shot to left field, her second home run of the season.

In the next inning, Dettling singled through the right side and advanced to second on the throw, scoring L. Miller and moving Lauren Diuco to third base. Nelson collected her third RBI of the game with a hit to right field and later in the inning, Dettling scored the final run of the game on a passed ball.

Nelson and L. Miller each recorded three-hit games while Hicks, Tessani Dixon and Wilson tallied two hits each in the Saints' 14-hit barrage.

Over her first 23.1 innings, Nelson had recorded only two strikeouts before punching out five against MSUB.

"Kim Nelson obviously had a great day pitching again. That may have been the best game she's thrown as far as keeping hitters off-balance" said head coach Rick Noren. "Montana State-Billings is a very good hitting team and to see her do so well is exciting".

Game Two

Dettling, who hit the go-ahead three-run home run in Friday's doubleheader against her sister, Megan Dettling, kickstarted the Saints' red-hot offense with another three-run home run in the first inning.

With the bases loaded in the second, Diuco beat out an slow dribbler to shortstop to pick up the Saints' fourth run of the game and one of three RBIs on the day. Dettling walked in another run on five pitches to give Saint Martin's an early 5-0 lead after two innings.

A seven run third inning capped-off the Saints' sweep of the Yellowjackets, highlighted by RBI doubles by Jackie Schmaeling and Dettling, along with a RBI single from Diuco and RBI groundout by pinch-hitter Alyssa French

Taylor Wolf led-off the fourth inning with a double to left field and later scored the Saints' 13th and final run of the game on a single by Diuco, her fourth hit of the ballgame, to third base.

The Yellowjackets scored three runs, on four hits and an error by the Saints in the fifth inning, but were eventually shut down by Nelson who came in the record the final two outs and seal the door on a 13-3 victory.

Lauren Maley (2-0) got the start in the circle, going 4.1 innings, allowing three runs on seven hits, walking one batter and striking out two before Nelson claimed the final two outs, both on groundballs.

"Nelson and Dettling came through for us in a big way at the plate as did the entire lineup throughout both games and except for a couple of defensive mistakes we played well all day and hope to get better as the season progresses" said Noren.

Up Next: Saint Martin's heads north of the border to face GNAC opponent Simon Fraser in a doubleheader on Saturday before facing Western Washington on the road on Sunday.
