NAMPA, Idaho –
Steven Sordahl and
Adam Eskil's three-hit games propelled the Saints in a 6-5 victory before dropping the backend of a doubleheader 2-1 to Northwest Nazarene on Friday.
Game One
Saint Martin's (7-11, 4-6 GNAC) took an early lead over the Crusaders (8-10, 6-4) after
Austin Feist reached base on a throwing error, which scored
Trevor Young. Feist scored on the next batter,
Adam Eskil's single up the middle to extend the Saints' lead to 2-0 after one inning.
Micah McNicoll reached on a fielding error to lead-off the fourth before Young's walk later in the inning put runners on the corner for Sordahl. Sordahl drove home the third and fourth run of the game with a double down the right field line.
Zach Raczok started the top of the sixth with a hit by pitch and later scored the Saints' fifth unanswered run on a double by Young down the right field line.
Northwest Nazarene got on the board in the bottom half of the sixth when a ground out with the bases loaded brought home their first run. Within one swing of the bat, the Crusaders trailed by one run after a three-run home run to left field.
The Saints added what proved to be a crucial insurance run in the eighth after a balk forced McNicoll to score. Northwest Nazarene, down to their final out, cut the Saints lead to 6-5 with a solo home run to right, but ultimately fell after
Luke Hare ended the game with a strikeout.
Aaron Shoup (1-2) earned his first victory of the 2017 campaign after pitching 6.1 innings, giving up four runs on six hits, walking four and punching out three.
Zach Stevenson faced one batter in the seventh before Hare pitched up the rare seven out save, his first of the season.
Game Two
Despite
Ryan Dorney pitching his fifth consecutive game of only allowing two earned runs or less this season, he picked up his fourth loss of the season as the Saints fell 2-1.
The Crusaders struck first with their third home run of the day, this one a solo shot to center field in the second inning. NNU added their second and final run of the game in the fourth after a sacrifice fly to center scored the runner on third.
The Saints made a rally in the seventh inning after McNicoll was hit by pitch and reached second on a single by
Shaan Kothari. After a strikeout and down to their final out, pinch-hitter
Ryan Colvin loaded the bases on a hit by pitch. Sordahl walked home the first run of the game and advanced the tying-run 90-feet away before a strikeout silenced the comeback.
Dorney (0-4) pitched a complete game, going six innings, giving up two runs, one earned, on nine hits, walked none and struck out three. Dorney has allowed 20 runs this season; however, only five have been earned as he carries a 1.85 ERA.
Up Next: The Saints remain in Nampa, Idaho to finish up the four-game series against Northwest Nazarene on Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
