HAYWARD, Calif. – Despite 18 runs over two games and
Jackie Schmaeling's two home runs, Saint Martin's Softball split their doubleheader against Holy Names University, 11-4 and 9-7.
Game One
Mary Dettling got the Saints (10-6) quickly on the board with a two-run home run, her fourth of the year, scoring
Lindsay Miller.
Corrie Wilson added one run on a solo shot to right field in the second inning before Dettling walked home
Lauren Diuco for a 4-0 lead after two.
Sabrina Hicks became the third Saint of the game to take a ball deep, this one a solo home run to left center in the top of the third.
Holy Names (2-21) scored their first run of the ballgame on a two RBI single down the left field line and cut the Saints' lead to 5-2.
The Saints added one run in the sixth inning on a L. Miller sacrifice fly to extend their lead to four runs.
Saint Martin's put the final nail in the coffin with a five-run seventh inning, highlighted by RBI singles from Schmaeling and
Tessani Dixon. Hicks and
Alyssa Slate each capitalized on Holy Names' errors and were the 10th and 11th run of the game.
Holy Names scored two runs in the final half inning on a Saints' error before ultimately falling 11-4.
Kim Nelson (6-2) improved her record after throwing a complete game, on seven hits, four runs, none earned, zero walks and one strikeout.
Game Two
The Hawks, powered by two early two-run home runs, took a 4-0 lead after two innings. The Saints plated their first run of the game in the top of the third after Wilson scored on Slate's fielder's choice.
Holy Names led-off the bottom half of the third with a solo home run to right center on a full count. With two outs and runners on first and second, Marissa Gasca provided the knockout with a three-run home run and an 8-1 lead.
Schmaeling provided a kickstart to the offense with a solo home run to right field for the second run of the game.
The Saints' comeback attempt began in the seventh inning on a RBI single by Dixon, plating both Diuco and L. Miller.
Jackie Schmaeling cleared the bases with her second home run of the game, this one a three-run blast to bring the Saints within two runs. However, the Saints' rally fell short and dropped the second game 9-7.
Lauren Maley (2-2) picked up the loss after pitching one inning, allowing two hits, three runs and one walk. L. Miller came in for relief, going two innings, giving up five runs on five hits while punching out two.
Jessica O'Toole finished the final three innings on one hit and one unearned run.
"Holy Names did a great hob and we need to become more consistent in all phases of the game" said head coach
Rick Noren.
