PORTLAND, Ore. - Saint Martin's Baseball scored eight unanswered runs to overcome a 6-0 Concordia lead to claim a victory in the first game before a seventh inning rally came up short in the second game of the doubleheader.
Game One
Concordia (7-21, 5-13 GNAC) propelled to a five run lead after the first inning, highlighted by a three-run home run from Tanner Williams and two RBI singles. Williams added one more run in the third inning on a RBI single up the middle to extend the lead to 6-0.
Saint Martin's (10-16, 7-11) offense delivered its' first runs in the fifth inning on a RBI single from right fielder
Austin Feist and a RBI hit-by-pitch from
Brandon Witherspoon cut the score to 6-2.
Isaac Hegamin chipped away at lead in the sixth with a single to left field that brought home
Zach Raczok.
The Saints began a five run seventh inning with a RBI double by
Adam Eskil and tied the game on a two RBI triple from
Ryan Colvin, scoring both Eskil and
Trevor Young. With runners on the corners, a double-steal by
Shaan Kothari and Raczok worked out in the Saints' favor and gave them their first lead of the game. Alec Hagerman's first RBI single of the game proved to be the final nail in the coffin to seal the 8-6 victory.
Aaron Shoup (2-3) picked up his second victory of the season with a 6.1 inning, six run, five strike out performance. Shoup faced 31 batters, giving up 10 hits and only walking one Cavalier.
Luke Hare earned his third save of the year after the rare eight out save on one hit and no runs and three strike outs.
Game Two
Concordia once again took the early lead with a double play ground out, resulting in one run and a 1-0 lead after one inning,
The Cavaliers added one in the second on a triple and one run in the fourth on a sacrifice bunt to extend their lead to 3-0. Their final two runs crossed the plate in the fifth, one from a sacrifice fly and the other by a wild pitch.
Saint Martin's seventh inning rally came into fruition with a bases loaded walk from
Cameron Mosier put the Saints on the board. The second run came when Witherspoon grounded into a double play, cutting the Cavaliers' lead to 5-2. Hagerman capitalized on a throwing error, reaching base and brought home Mosier to bring the tying run to the plate.
Steven Sordahl singled to shortstop, advancing Hagerman to third with two outs. The rally was eventually ended on a Feist line out to center field and Concorida walked away with the 5-3 win.
Ryan Dorney (0-5) picked up the loss after throwing 4.2 innings, allowing five runs. four earned on six hits while walking four and punching out two.
Patrick Hoeper threw 1.1 shut out innings, not allowing a single hit and striking out three.
