TURLOC, Calif. - Saint Martin's Softball came up short in the extra inning walk-off win for No. 15 Cal State Monterey Bay in the third game of the Tournament of Champions.
Monterey Bay (26-4) took the early 1-0 lead, capitalizing on a fielding error by the Saints (12-9), allowing the runner on third to score.
The Saints' offense was held in the check through the first five innings, with only one runner reaching scoring position.
Lauren Diuco's single up the middle brought home
Lindsay Miller and tied the game in the sixth inning. Diuco scored later in the inning on a
Kim Nelson single to give the Saints a 2-1 lead after six.
Cal State, down to their final out with a runner on third, tied the game on a single from Valerie Aguilar to send the game into extra innings.
The Saints started the eighth with a runner on second and after a line out and single from Diuco, the go-ahead run was one base away. Monterey Bay worked out of the jam with two ground outs to third base, stranding two runners in scoring position.
Cal State capitalized on their runner at second after a sacrifice bunt and two intentional walks loaded the bases for Jayme Stark. The shortstop singled up the middle, driving in the winning run and clinched the 3-2 victory.
Kim Nelson (8-4) picked her second loss of the tournament after pitching all 7.1 innings, on 10 hits, three runs, one earned and walking three. Nelson did not strike out any of the 34 batters she faced.
"We played very well today and had opportunities to win the game against a nationally ranked team in Monterey Bay" said head coach
Rick Noren.
