TURLOCK, Calif. The Saints' bats came alive behind
Kim Nelson and
Corrie Wilson's combined five hits and five RBIs in the 11-3 victory over Cal State East Bay in the Tournament of Champions.
Saint Martin's (13-9) used seven unanswered runs in the first two innings to control the ballgame over Cal State East Bay (20-14), starting with two in the first off of a Nelson single up the middle.
Alyssa Slate started the scoring in the five run second inning on a sacrifice bunt, that she would reach base on a throwing error by the pitcher, allowing
Paige Miller and
Sabrina Hicks to score.
Lindsay Miller singled on a bunt and put runners on the corners. L. Miller stole second, and advance to third on the throwing error by the catcher, scoring Slate.
Mary Dettling scored the fourth run after her single found grass down the right field line, which brought home L. Miller. Wilson extended the Saints' lead to 7-0 on a single to right field, scoring Dettling from third.
East Bay first run of the game came in the bottom of the second on a bases loaded walk. The Saints escaped the one-out jam after
Lauren Maley forced a fielder's choice and ground out to keep the score at 7-1 after two.
Saint Martin's continued to pile onto their lead in the fourth inning after a Wilson double to left center scored
Jackie Schmaeling. The Saints added three more runs in the top of the fifth after Nelson and
Nicki DeHan each singled and
Courtney Baird's RBI groundout brought the score to 11-1.
Cal State East Bay pulled to within eight runs in the bottom of the fifth on a sacrifice fly and RBI single but ultimately fell 11-3 in the shortend five inning game due to the run rule.
Maley (3-2) improved her record after throwing a five inning complete game on six hits and three runs, only one earned. She walked one and struck out zero over the 23 batters she faced.
"Our offense did very well against East Bay and gave our pitching a nice lead to work with early in the game" said head coach
Rick Noren.
