Saints Softball Lose 9-1 to No. 7 Chico State

TURLOCK, Calif. - Four errors proved too costly for the Saints as they fell 9-1 in five innings to seventh ranked team in the country Chico State to open up the final day of the Tournament of Champions.

Chico State (25-5) took the early lead, capitalizing on a throwing error by Kim Nelson and later a RBI groundout for a 2-0 lead after the first inning.

The Wildcats added one run in the third inning on a RBI single and fielding error by the Saints. Chico State opened up the lead with a five run fourth inning, highlighted by two RBI singles and a two RBI double. The final two runs of the inning came on another fielding error by Saint Martin's.

The Saints (13-10) allowed the ninth unanswered run in the top of the fifth before Mary Dettling's single to center field brought home Lindsay Miller and put them on the board. Haley Gilham (14-2) locked up the victory with a game ending double play in the bottom of the fifth.

Kim Nelson (8-5) got the start for the Saints, going 3.2 innings, allowing eight hits and runs, five earned, while walking one and striking out one. Jessica O'Toole was called in from the bullpen to finish the final four outs, giving up one unearned run on three hits.

"We played a sloppy game with no urgency" said head coach Rick Noren. "Although Kim Nelson didn't pitch a great game,it was a lack of focus and execution on offense and defense that resulted in the loss".

Up Next: The Saints play their sixth and final game of the Tournament of Champions against Cal State Dominguez Hills immediately after the Chico State game.
