Saints Drop Both In Doubleheader Versus Western Oregon

PORTLAND, Ore. – Western Oregon silenced Saint Martin's bats to secure both wins of a doubleheader at Concordia University's Porter Park on Wednesday.

Game One

Western Oregon (23-11, 22-8 GNAC) established the first lead of the game after a RBI single right fielder Martinez, drove in a run and a 1-0 in the third inning.

The Wolves added to their lead in the fourth inning on a two RBI double to right center off the bat of center fielder Garcia, extending the lead to 3-0.

The Saints' (13-25, 10-20) bats were held in check through the first five innings until Isaac Hegamin singled up the middle, driving in Austin Feist and getting SMU on the board at 3-1. The Saints were not done in the sixth, and added one more on a RBI single to left field from Ryan Colvin.

Feist collected his second hit of the game, to center field, in the seventh inning, plating Alec Hagerman and locking the game in a 3-3 tie.

The Wolves; however, rallied in the bottom of the eight with two runs to secure the 8-5 victory in the front end of a doubleheader.

Trevor Young got the start on the mound, rewarding the Saints with seven innings, allowing three runs on eight hits with four strike outs. Luke Hare (2-3) picked up the loss on one inning, giving up two runs, one earned on two hits.

Game Two

Western Oregon once again jumped out to an early lead with a four run third inning, highlighted by a bases loaded single that scored three runs.

The Wolves added their final run of the game in the bottom of the fourth on a triple to center field by the shortstop Nygaard.

Saint Martin's got runners on the corner for Brandon Witherspoon, who's sacrifice fly drove home Matt McNicoll who tripled earlier in the inning.

The Saints had an opportunity to close the 5-1 lead in the sixth inning with the bases loaded and only one out. However, the Wolves worked out the jam with a strike out and fly-out, and eventually went on to win the 5-1 seven inning game.

Adam Eskil (0-2) earned the loss after starting and going 2.2 innings, on three runs on one hit, two walks and two strike outs. Benjamin Wadowski pitched one inning out of the bullpen before Zach Stevenson recorded one out and Jacob Phipps pitched the final two innings.

Up Next: The Saints return home for their first games at SMU Baseball field this season with a four-game series against Northwest Nazarene, starting on Friday at 1 p.m. Live stats and video will be available for all four games.
