LACEY, Wash. – Saint Martin's Baseball suffered from defensive woes as they fell in both ends of a doubleheader against Concordia University to wrap up the 2017 season.
Game One
The Saints fell behind early after Concordia capitalized on three first inning errors en route to a 3-0 lead after the top of the first.
Saint Martin's chipped into the lead with a first inning run behind a RBI single from
Zach Raczok, scoring
Alec Hagerman.
SMU added another run in the second inning after
Kahi Hirano's sacrifice bunt scored
Austin Feist.
The Cavaliers extended their lead to 5-2 after a solo home run in the fourth and an inside the park home run in the sixth by Bevacqua.
The Saints responded again in the bottom of the sixth on a RBI double by Feist, plated both
Trevor Young and Raczok, bringing the Saints within one run after six.
However, Concordia proceeded to score 14 straight runs in the final three innings, converting on four Saints' errors to secure the 19-5 victory.
Ryan Dorney (1-6) picked up the loss after throwing six innings, allowing 11 runs; however, only three were earned with eight strike outs.
Patrick Hoeper and
Zach Stevenson combined to throw the final three innings.
Game Two
The Saints jumped out to an early lead in the first inning on RBI singles from Young and Raczok.
Concordia added one run in the fourth before taking the lead in the fifth inning on a RBI single and a RBI groundout.
Saint Martin's tied the game in the bottom of the sixth on a wild pitch before the Cavaliers scored the eventual game winning run on a sacrifice fly.
Young pitched 5.1 innings after getting the start for the Saints, allowing three runs, two earned on six hits with one strike out.
Adam Eskil (0-3) picked up the loss after recording two outs before
Luke Hare pitched the final inning.
