Season Preview – The Saints begin the 2017 season on the road with two matches in Portland, Oregon, hosted by Concordia University, where they will face San Francisco State and Humboldt State on August 31 and September 2 respectively. SMU travels to Northwest University, Cal State Los Angeles and Cal State San Bernardino before returning home for their last non-conference match and their first official home game against Hawaii-Pacific on September 17. The begin conference action with dates against Western Washington and nationally ranked Simon Fraser. SMU will face Western Washington, Simon Fraser, Northwest Nazarene, Montana State Billings, Concordia and Seattle Pacific in a home-and-home series during their conference schedule. Preseason Review – After outscoring their opponents 8-3, the Saints walked away victorious in all three of their exhibitions this preseason. Led by true freshman
Edgar Iniguez, who scored two goals and one assists for five points, and Seattle University transfer
Brandon Madsen, two goals and one assist for five points, the Saints defeated Corban University, Northwest Christian University and Pacific Lutheran University at home. Witzel, Eldred,
Jason Fairhurst and
Collin LaBranche all scored a goal each. Fairhurst's goal came in the 70th minute of a tied 1-1 match against Northwest Christian to clinch the 2-1 victory. The Saints outshot their opponents 39-20 and recorded 23 shots on goal to their opponents 12. 59.0 percent of SMU's shots found their target on goal and the Saints averaged 13 shots per contest. The Saints managed six assists to their opponents one and 16 corner kicks versus 12 for the opposition. Five of the eight goals for the Saints came in the second half as well as 26 shots compared to 13 in the first half. Small recorded over 113 minutes at keeper during the three matches, and only gave up one goal and managed four saves. The three Saints' keepers (Small,
Dylan Shaw and Parker Elliot) combined for nine saves in 270 minutes of action.
Rob Walker Takes Over Men Full Time – During the summer, Director of Athletics,
Bob Grisham, announced that Head Coach
Rob Walker would become the full-time head coach for the men's program. Walker, who had coached both of Saint Martin's men's and women's programs since their inaugural seasons in 2007. In 10 seasons, Walker had coached both programs to a combined 104 victories including the 2009 GNAC Championship on men's side and two GNAC Coach of the Year awards.
Young Saints' Team – 17 new players joined the Saint Martin's squad during off the season including 14 freshman and three transfer students. Already, the new faces are making an impact on the pitch with true freshman

Kyle Witzel chasing Saints' history – Only 18 points and seven goals away from tying Xan Nixon's (2008-11) career records, Witzel will look this season to break a couple Saint Martin's records. After breaking the school season record in points (24), points per game (1.41), goals (11) and goals per game (.65), Witzel looks poised, by season's end, to be the new points and goals leader in Saint Martin's history.
San Francisco State Preview – Out of the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA), San Francisco State is coming off a 9-6-2 season under second year head coach Javier Ayala-Hil. Returning Freshman of the Year Richard Leon (seven goals, one assist, 15 points) looks to led the Gators in the 2017 season after being voted seventh in the preseason poll. Returning All-Conference selections Andy Altamirano (two goals, four assists, eight points) and Aydan Bowers (one goal, two points) look to make an impact in the middle of the pitch. The Gators lose All-Conference selection Emmanuel Jimenez at goalkeeper and look to replace him with Sophomore Kyle Harmina and Freshmans Roin Flynn and Erik Ornelas.
Humboldt State Preview – Another CCAA member, Humboldt State finished the 2016 season with a 4-11-1 season under fourth year head coach Fred Jungemann. Picked 12 out of 13 teams in conference, the Jacks look to replace leading goal scorer Johan Muliadi. Key returners for the squad include Forward Isaiah Dairo (two goals, one assist, five points), Midfielder Max Steinmetz (one goal, two assists, four points), and Midfielder Mumbi Kwesele (one goal, one assist, three points). The Jacks return both goalkeepers from last season in Christopher Cherms (1,031 minutes, 70 saves, 79.5 save percentage), and Robert Quintero (458 minutes, 27 saves, 75.0 save percentage).
