Women's Soccer Falls In Season Opener

SEASIDE, Calif. - An early goal and four second half goals by Cal State Monterey Bay spoiled the season opener for the Saints' Women's Soccer team, 6-1, as Heather Cato made her debut as the new head coach.

The Otters (1-0) scored a goal in the first eight minutes to take an early lead and added one more in the 39th minute to lead 2-0 into halftime. The Otters rattled off four straight goals in the second half, extending the score to 6-0.

In the final minute of the match, Jade Castaneda connected with Shea McKnight, who scored her first goal of the season and her third of her career. Castaneda's pass drew the keeper out and McKnight capitalized on her opportunity with a goal.

"Obviously it's not the outcome we were wanting but there were plenty of things we can take away from today," said Cato. "CSUMB is a good squad who challenged us. So our plan is to stay the course and continue to believe in ourselves and the process."

The Saints (0-1) took nine shots, with five landing on goal, along with three corner kicks. Brittany Orlosky and McKnight led the team with three shots, with Kiersten Madsen and Kylee Sarchett each taking one shot.

Sara Christensen got the start at keeper, making seven saves on 21 shots faced and picked up the loss.

The Saints travel to Belmont, California for a match-up with Notre Dame de Namur on Saturday, September 2 at 11:00 a.m.
