SAN MARCOS, Calif. - Behind a career-high 21 kills for
Rebecca Mitchell, the Saint Martin's Volleyball ended their four-game tournament in California with a sweep of host school Cal State San Marcos, 25-17, 26-24, 25-22, finishing the tournament with a 3-1 record.
The Saints (3-1) dominated the beginning of the first set over Cal State San Marcos (2-2) with a 10-4 run, highlighted by six kills from Mitchell. The Cougars closed the lead to three, 18-15, later in the set; however, the Saints immediately responded with four straight points and would eventually win the set 25-17.
The Cougars pounced early on the Saints in the second set with a 14-6 lead. Capitalizing on attack errors by San Marcos, the Saints rallied behind kills from Mitchell and a service ace from
Emily Gooding to go on a 8-2 run and knot the game at 15-15. Each team traded small runs down the stretch but the Saints managed to get the last one, winning the final five points and taking the set 26-24 on a
Nicolette Nesbitt service ace.
Once again the Saints found themselves trailing early, 5-1, before slowly chipping away at the lead until a 4-0 run brought the Saints on top 16-15. The Cougars used a 4-0 rally to regain a 20-18 lead before the Saints rallied around three kills from Mitchell, the last one coming to seal the 25-22 set victory, and 3-0 match victory.
"San Marcos is a good blocking team and have one of the best freshman Outside Hitters in the nation, but tonight our team work prevailed," said head coach
Jon Killingbeck. "When ever you can pair 16 kills a set with 24 digs a set you are going to win a lto of matches. Overall, our players are doing a lot great things and we are excited to come back to the Pavilion."
Mitchell led the way for the third straight match in kills, with a new career-high 21, after tying her old mark earlier today.
Emily Gooding led the team in service aces (2) and blocks (3), while Nesbitt tallied 45 assists and
Courtney Misner led the match with 23 digs.
As a team, the Saints led the match with 57 points, 48 kills, three aces, 48 assists and 73 digs.
