LACEY, Wash. - The Saints increased their win streak to four games after sweeping Humboldt State (25-19, 25-14, 25-23) in front of a rowdy Marcus Pavilion crowd to begin the Division II West Region Volleyball Showcase.
The Saints (4-1) wasted no time establishing control of the match, jumping out to an early 13-5 lead, highlighted by 6-0 run, in which
Emily Gooding recorded two kills. Humboldt State (1-2) rallied behind a 6-1 run to cut the score to 17-16 before a
Rebecca Mitchell began the Saints' very own 5-1 run, with the Saints eventually winning the set 25-19.
SMU once again dominated early, grabbing a 11-5 lead by three
Rachel Gondrezick and
Megan Vernoy kills each. After the Jacks scored two points, the Saints stretched the lead to 16-9 sparked by back-to-back kills from Mitchell. Kills by Gondrezick and Vernoy sealed the second set 25-14 in favor of the Saints.
Saint Martin's rattled off the first five points of the third set before the Jacks responded with a 7-2 run to knott the set at 7-7. The Timberjacks' lead grew to three twice in the final set before the Saints began chipping away at the score. Kills from Gondrezick, Vernoy and Gooding put the Saints up 22-19. After two points for each side,
Nicolette Nesbitt clinched the sweep by sneaking a ball in the middle of the Humboldt State team for a match point.
Gondrezick led the team with 12 kills, followed closely by Vernoy (10) and Mitchell (8). Nesbitt led the Saints with 35 assists, while
Clarice Buchanan recorded a team-leading 12 digs. Nesbitt, and Gooding each recorded one service ace with Gooding leading the team with three blocks.
As a unit, the Saints recorded 48 points on 41 kills, along with two aces, five blocks, 40 assists and 51 digs.
The Saints return to action, tomorrow, September 8, against Point Loma, whom lost in straight sets to Montana State Billings earlier on Thursday. Match is set to begin at 3:00 p.m. and live stats and video will be available.Â
