LACEY, Wash. - Two goals in the final ten minutes pushed the Griffins of Westminster College over the Saints of Saint Martin's, 2-0, in the home opener for SMU.
The Griffins (2-1) controlled the ball for the majority of the match, taking 21 shots compared to the Saints' three. Despite the constant pressure from Westminster, Saint Martin's (0-3) held their ground, forcing a 0-0 tie into halftime.
Not until the 18th shot of the match did SMU's defense finally conceived a goal, when a ball deflected off a Saint in the box, rolling directly to Ellie Echevario, who scored her first goal of the season. The final blow came in the 85th minute when a cross from Sara Weixkler found Abigail Black for the Griffins' second goal of the match and the eventual 2-0 victory.
Selesha Harrah tallied two of the Saints' shots, with the final one coming from
Shea McKnight.
Ali Koehler made the start at keeper, playing the first 45 minutes and recording a clean half with three saves on eight shots.
Sara Christensen played the final 45 minutes, and allowed two goals after facing 13 shots and saving four attempts.
"The girls did a good job today at coming out strong and hard from the start, battling against a good team," said head coach
Heather Cato. "I was especially proud of the efoort out backs and keepers gave today. However, we have to be able to put a full game together, start to finish."
The Saints travel to Pacific Lutheran on September 10 for a 3:00 p.m. matchup with the Lutes.
