Madsen's Hat Trick Leads Saints On Senior Day

LACEY, Wash. – For the second time in his career, Brandon Madsen pulled off a hat trick against the Yellowjackets of Montana State Billings, scoring in the 4th, 11th, and 41st minute in the Saints' 4-2 win on senior day.

Last season, Madsen torched the Yellowjackets with three goals at home, and a year later, the story stayed the same. Connecting on his eighth, ninth, and tenth goal of the season, Madsen provided all the firepower the Saints needed to defeat MSUB. Jason Fairhurst added his second goal of the season in the 20th minute to help secure the 4-2 win.

Madsen's first goal came off a corner from Oscar Aguilar, when his header found the back of the net from the middle of the box. The second goal came just seven minutes later, on another cross by Aguilar, from the middle of the box to the back of the net. Fairhurst punched home the third goal of the match for SMU, scoring on a cross by Sebastian Navarro, from the back corner of the box to the near post, 10 yards out in the 20th minute. The Yellowjackets managed to trim the lead to two with a goal in the 34th minute off a cross to the middle of the box, working back to the near post. Madsen's final dagger came in the 41st minute when he beat the keeper one-on-one and shot across the box to the back post for his 26th goal of his career.

In the second half, the Saints' defense took over and used clock management to drain out the time on the Yellowjackets. Montana State Billings managed to score once more, in the 84th minute, when Andres Perez netted his second goal of the match. However, the three goal lead by the Saints was too much for the Yellowjackets to handle as SMU cruised to a 4-2 win on senior day to close out the home schedule.

"We thought we got off to a great start with our four first half goals," said head coach Rob Walker. "We really did well in creating our chances and getting our shape and movement right. The second half was a picture of good concepts that didn't pan out. We used the term 'macro concentration' and our form in the half lacked strength mentally as we defended well but our attack faded. The win though feels terrific and the guys are looking forward now to SPU on Thursday."

The Saints hit the road for the final week of the season, traveling to Seattle Pacific on Thursday for a 7:00 p.m. match. Live stats and video of the match will be available on smusaints.com.
