BILLINGS, Mont. – Back-to-back second half goals by
Kylee Sarchett, along with a clean sheet performance by
Ali Koehler was what the Saints needed to claim their first points of the conference, beating Montana State Billings 2-0 on the road.
After a quiet first half, Sarchett broke the tie with her third goal of the season in the 68th minute, before quickly punching in the second of the match in the 69th minute. Koehler shut the door on the Yellowjackets (4-5-1, 1-4-0), recording six saves and shutout as Saint Martin's (5-6-0, 1-5-0) picked up their first conference win of the year.
In the first half, the Yellowjackets managed to take six shots, with five landing on target. However,
Ali Koehler and the Saints' defended each attempt, making all five saves. The Saints' offense created three shot opportunities, with
Kylee Sarchett's attempt in the 25th minute hitting on goal. Both sides remained looking for their first goal entering halftime.
Neither side was able to crack the scoreboard until Sarchett created enough space to connect on a ball to the upper left corner of the goal for her third goal of the season. Just 79 seconds later, Sarchett put the game out of reach, on a ball from
Kiersten Madsen, scoring inside the box to the far post and her fourth goal of the year. Koehler and the Saints' defense shut down the Yellowjacket's offensive game and limited them to only four shots in the second half.
"Today was a great response to the past couple of weeks," said head coach
Heather Cato. "After a few halftime adjustments, we came out and played our style of soccer. Great individual performances all over the pitch. We need to keep the focus and momentum going into Saturday."
Sarchett and Madsen recorded six of the Saints' nine shots, with
Natalie Brown,
LeAnn Phanakhone and
Jolene Kvinsland each taking one attempt. Koehler finished the match with six saves on 10 shots faced.
The Saints return home to host Northwest Nazarene on Saturday, October 6 at 3:30 p.m. Live stats and video of the match will be available on smusaints.com.
