NAMPA, Idaho – After Northwest Nazarene scored an early goal, the Saints responded with force, punching in six goals en route to their ninth win of the season, the most since 2009.
Brandon Madsen finished the season on a hot streak, scoring six goals in the final three goals, including two against the Nighthawks.
Sebastian Navarro,
Jason Fairhurst,
Cayman John, and
Alexis Lopez all scored one goal as SMU finished the season with a 7-5-0 record in conference, also their first winning season in conference play since 2009.
Northwest Nazarene got on the board first in the 16th minute; however, the lead did not last long. The Saints quickly responded in the 24th minute when Madsen scored on a thru ball in the box, assisted by Navarro. Saint Martin's managed to clinch a lead before the break, with Navarro scoring his sixth goal of the season in the 44th minute.
In the second half, the Saints lit up the scoreboard, scoring four times in the matter of 23 minutes. In the 57th minute, Madsen scored his 13th goal of the season and 29th goal of his career, now only one away from tying the school record. Fairhurst struck in the 65th minute, followed by John just a minute later. The sixth and final goal of the match came in the 80th minute off the foot of Lopez.
"NNU really pushed the right buttons to start the game," head coach
Rob Walker. "Our response following the goal was a tone setter. From a coaching point of view, we appreciate the effort from half time thru the end really showed the guys' ability."
Collecting assists in the six goals was Navarro twice, Madsen, Fairhurst, and
Stephen Todd Murray JR.
Griffin Small got the start at goalie, going 78 minutes, allowing only the one goal and made eight saves.
Dylan Shaw checked in for the final 13 minutes and made one save.
The Saints' 9-9-0 record is the most wins overall since their 2009 GNAC Championship year, and a seven win improvement from last season.
