HILO, Hawaii – Hawaii Hilo sat down 24 straight Saints' hitters after a double in the first inning to squander Saint Martin's opening day as UHH defeated SMU 3-0.
Bryant Nakagawa in the Saints' (0-1) second at-bat of the game, doubled to center field; however, Hawaii Hilo (1-4) retired 24 straight batters to quiet the bats and go on to a 3-0 victory.
Mickey Walker (0-1) got the start for the Saints, throwing four innings, but struggled with his control. Walker walked five Vulcans, while giving up three hits, leading to all three runs, while striking out two.
Tanner Inouye came in for relief, throwing four shutout innings, allowing four hits in 14 batters faced.
All three of the Vulcans' runs came in the second inning, which led-off with back-to-back walks. Followed by a fielder's choice that loaded the bases, Hawaii Hilo got on the board with a single to right field, which drove in two runs. After another walk and strike out, the final run of the game scored before the Saints could complete the double-play ending the inning.
The Saints' second hit of game came with one out in the top of the ninth inning, when
Ryne Oshiro picked up his first collegiate hit on a ball down the left field line. The Vulcans closed the door with back-to-back strike outs to earn the 3-0 victory.
