TURLOCK, Calif. – Timely hits by the whole Saints' lineup powered the Saints past San Francisco State, 7-4, to open the second day of the Tournament of Champions.
The Saints began the game with three straight walks to load the bases for
Kylie Lopez, who doubled to left field to give SMU a 2-0 lead. San Francisco State tied the game in the bottom of first on an error by SMU.
Saint Martin's quickly regained the lead in the top of the second on a RBI single by
Lindsay Miller, scoring
Nicki DeHan, who led-off with a double. Later in the inning,
Tessani Dixon drove in a run on a sacrifice fly to left, scoring L. Miller.
SFSU added one run in the fourth inning, but the Saints broke open the lead in the fifth inning.
Sabrina Hicks added her first and second RBIs of the game on a double down the left field line, stretching the lead to 7-3.
Dixon picked up her second RBI of the day, on a single to shortstop, scoring
Lauren Diuco in the sixth inning as the Saints cruised to a 7-4 victory to open up the second day of the Tournament of Champions.
Lauren Maley (6-8) got the start for the Saints, throwing four innings, allowing three runs, two earned, on five hits, and earned the win.
Kim Nelson was called on to close out the final three innings, allowing one run on two hits with one strikeout. Nelson earned her first save of the season.
"Our bats came alive with really good offensive production, and solid defense," said head coach
Jim Peterson. "We finished the game out with a really good win this morning."
