TURLOCK, Calif. – Following an hour plus weather delay, the Saints loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh inning. Freshman
Julia Lucas singled up the middle, ending the game on a walk-off and a Saints' 3-2 victory over Chaminade.
Chaminade started the game with a double, and later scored on back-to-back wild pitches to take an early 1-0 lead.
Lindsay Miller was then called in and stranded the runners on second and third to end the first inning.
In the bottom of the third,
Kylie Lopez started it off with a double to left field.
Regan Byrd reached base on single to shortstop, setting up
Alyssa French who reached on a fielder's choice; however, an error on the play allowed Lopez to score. Next batter was
Sabrina Hicks, who sent a ball to right field, deep enough to allow Byrd to score from third, and Saint Martin's led 2-1.
In the top of the fifth inning, Chaminade tied the game with a two-out single to right field, scoring the runner on second.
Paige Miller reached base in the bottom of the sixth on a single to right center and advanced to second on a groundout. With the go-ahead run in scoring position, and two outs in the inning, a weather delay halted the game. Coming out of the delay, French lined out to centerfield.
After a clean top of the seventh, the Saints had an opportunity to walk-off with their second win of the day.
Sabrina Hicks doubled, followed by a bunt single by
Nicki DeHan to put runners on the corner, nobody out.
Devyn Connolly received four straight balls to walk the bases loaded. After a fielder's choice cut the runner down at home,
Julia Lucas entered the game as a pinch-hitter. On a 2-1 count, Lucas singled up the middle, scoring DeHan and sending the Saints to their second victory of the day and third of the Tournament.
Jessica O'Toole got the start but was unable to record an out, giving up one run. L. Miller came in from the pen, throwing 4.2 innings of relief, allowing only one run on four hits.
Lauren Maley (7-8) earned the victory after finishing off the final 2.1 innings, giving up no runs, two hits and two strikeouts.
"The game was a defensive game that went into a rain delay and we came back with really good energy," said head coach
Jim Peterson. "
Sabrina Hicks got a big double to start a comeback to win the game in the bottom of the seventh.
Julia Lucas' pinch hit single won the game for us."
