Saints Win Tournament Of Champions Finale Behind Five Run Inning

TURLOCK, Calif. – The Saints completed their trek through the Tournament of Champions with a 8-3 victory over Dominican on Sunday. Saint Martin's concluded the tournament with a 5-1 record, their best finish since the silver medal finish in 2015

After a quite top of the first, Lindsay Miller led off the bottom half of the inning with a single to left field. She proceeded to steal second, setting up Tessani Dixon for an RBI opportunity. Dixon connected on a pitch down the right field line for the first run of the game.

Dominican quickly responded, using three singles in the top of the second to score two runs, and gain a 2-1 advantage. The Penguins were able to hold the Saints' bats in check for a couple innings until Dixon singled to pitcher in the fourth. Emily Baca pinch ran and worked her way to third on a pass ball and fly ball to right field. With one out, Regan Byrd tied the game up with a single to right field.

The next inning, the Saint managed to take the lead back on an error by Dominican that allowed Paige Miller to score from second. In the top of the sixth, Dominican worked the bases-loaded with two outs with their eight hitter at the plate. Maley worked out of the jam with a fly ball to Lauren Diuco in centerfield.

The Saints added insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth when Nicki DeHan collected her fifth RBI of the day on a triple to left field. The final nail in the coffin occurred when P. Miller and L. Miller went back-to-back RBI singles. But the Saints didn't stop there, Dixon added two more runs with a triple up the middle as Saint Martin's cruised to an 8-3 victory.

Lindsay Miller got the start, going three innings, allowing two runs on six hits, before Lauren Maley (9-8) earned the victory. Maley threw the final four innings, only giving up one run on four hits with one strikeout.

"Offensively our bats came alive and we had really good offense production to get us a big lead," said head coach Jim Peterson. "Lauren Maley threw really well to complete the win for us. We finished 5-1 for the tournament."

Saint Martin's returns to conference action next weekend, first with a doubleheader against Concordia on Friday. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. with live stats and video of the games available on smusaints.com.
