PORTLAND, Ore. – Two late innings rallies by Concordia lifted them past the Saints, 5-3 and 8-7, to complete the series sweep on Saturday.
The Saints led both games of the doubleheader; however, Concordia managed to dig their back into both ends, including a walk-off double in bottom of the seventh of the second game.
Saint Martin's (4-24, 3-17) got on the board first in the opening game in the fourth inning. After
Micah McNicoll's single to shortstop, a throwing error by Concordia (10-20, 9-11) allowed
Dakota Hill to score. Later in the inning, with runners in scoring position,
Kahi Hirano cleared the bases with a double to left center, putting SMU up 3-0.
Concordia began to chip away at the lead, scoring one run in the bottom of fourth, two in the fifth and finally tying the game in the sixth on a RBI single up the middle. The Cavs completed the rally in the eighth inning when a ball found grass down the left field line, scoring two en route to a 5-3 victory.
Mickey Walker (0-5) got the start, going six innings, allowing four runs on seven hits with two walks and striking out four.
Robbie Shineman and
Luke Hare threw the final two innings of relief.
The Cavaliers jumped out to an early lead in the second bill, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first. With the bases loaded in the third,
Austin Feist delivered the clutch double, clearing the bases and tying the game at 3-3.
In the fifth inning, Hill's sac fly brought home
Steven Sordahl, giving Saint Martin's a 4-3 lead. The Saints continued to add to the lead in the inning on a RBI single by
Jake Leonard, a RBI fielder's choice from
Bryant Nakagawa and
Ryne Oshiro. Saint Martin's stretched their lead to 7-3 after five.
Concordia added one run in the sixth before they loaded the bases in the seventh inning. A walk, followed by a RBI single set the stage for the walk-off double to win the game for Concordia at 8-7.
Tanner Inouye started the game, going four innings, allowing three runs before
Benjamin Wadowski threw 0.2 innings. Hare pitched another 1.1 innings, then
Adam Eskil (0-3) had an opportunity to seal the victory over SMU but was unable to secure the save.
The Saints travel to Northwest Nazarene for their next four-game series. The first doubleheader is scheduled for Friday, April 6 at 3:00 p.m.
