Saints' Bats Go Cold In Montana - Connolly and Dixon both hit home runs to center field, picking up a combined three RBIs while
Kim Nelson worked nearly a complete game to earn the victory. The Yellowjackets (16-18, 6-7) used three large innings in the second game to capitalize on the Saints (20-15, 10-8) and secure the doubleheader split.
The Saints' (20-17, 10-10) pitching staff came back strong against the Yellowjackets (18-18, 8-7) after allowing 13 runs in yesterday's loss; however, MSUB found ways to keep the Saints' offense at bay to secure the doubleheader sweep.
Saints Named GNAC Team Of The Week – The Saints' softball team traveled to California in March to compete in the Tournament of Champions and came back with a 5-1 record, their best finish since 2015. Due to that, the GNAC office announced Monday the Saints were the Red Lion GNAC Team of the Week. Behind strong pitching from All-Tournament selections
Lauren Maley and
Lindsay Miller, the Saints defeated regional powerhouses like Azusa Pacific and Humboldt State, along with victories over Chaminade, San Francisco State and Dominican.
Tessani Dixon (.524 avg, 1 HR, 8 RBI) along with
Nicki DeHan (.375 avg, 5 RBI) and Miller (.400 avg, 7 runs) fueled the Saints' offense for the weekend.
Lights Out Pitching Staff – The Saints are second in the GNAC in earned run average. SMU has posted a 3.38 team ERA and are led by their two starters
Lauren Maley and
Kim Nelson, who have posted 2.70 and 3.66 ERAs respectively. Maley and Nelson rank third and 12th in the GNAC in ERA with teammate
Lindsay Miller ranks 11th at 3.61 ERA.
Nelson Controls The Plate – In over 80 innings of work,
Kim Nelson has only allowed nine walks. Nelson currently is posting a 2.33 K/BB ratio, striking out 21 batters this season, and leads for least amount of walks given up in the GNAC.
Diuco Picks Up Right Where She Left Off – After being named to the 2017 GNAC first team as an unanimous selection last year, Diuco hit .438 in the Desert Stinger. Collecting 35 hits in 105 at-bats for a .333 average, Diuco also caused havoc in the base paths, going 16-for-16 in stolen base opportunities, raising her stolen base percentage to 92.7 percent in her career.
Lindsay Miller Chasing Record Books – Entering the year, Miller was only 33 hits away from 200 in her career. Only six Saints have reached the 200-hit mark. Miller achieved the milestone with an infield base hit during her final at-bat versus Western Oregon on March 31. She now eyes the sixth overall in the record book, five hits away from Mary Detting.
Kim Nelson Closing In On History – Nelson is eyeing two milestones this season, the 500-inning mark and 50-win mark. Only one Saint has reached the 500-innings and 50 win mark in their career (Sam Munger). Nelson entered the season with 36 wins and 420.1 innings pitched. Nelson surpassed the mark in the third inning at Montana State Billings in April. So far, Nelson has won six games, meaning she is eight wins from the milestone.
Tessani Dixon Providing The Power In The Middle Of The Order – Hitting in the middle of the order, Dixon provided some much need quality at-bats. For the season, Dixon is hitting .314 with five home runs and 24 RBIs, and is tied for eighth in the GNAC in RBIs, and tied for eighth in home runs.
Nicki DeHan's Bat On Fire At Hot Corner – Taking over as the starting third baseman this season, DeHan has proved to be one of the best hitters for the Saints this season. Hitting .304 on the year with a team's third best 14 RBIs, DeHan has provided clutch hits, including a game-winning extra inning base hit over Regional Powerhouse Humboldt State.
