BILLINGS, Mont. – After a strong starting performance by
Ryan Dorney, and four hitless innings of relief by
Matthew Dunaway, the Saints rallied in the 11th inning on a game winning RBI single by
Ryne Oshiro to upset Montana State Billings.
Austin Feist used a 3-for-5 day with two RBIs to put the Saints on top early, before scoring on a RBI triple by clean-up hitter
Adam Eskil in the fifth.
Ryan Dorney tossed six dominating innings to start the game, allowing only one run and striking out three. The Yellowjackets tied up the game in the seventh, but Dunaway allowed the Saints' offense time to respond and win the game in the 11th on a single by
Ryne Oshiro to take the series opener.
The Saints (9-32, 8-25) got on the board first, plating Oshiro on a groundball to shortstop by Feist. Feist added his second RBI of the game and his 26th of the season in the fifth inning, driving in
Micah McNicoll on a single to center field. The next batter, Eskil, drove a ball to deep center, recording his first triple of the season and put SMU up 3-0 after five.
The Yellowjackets finally got to Dorney in the sixth, after five shutout innings against the top offensive team in the GNAC. A solo home run to left field pulled the game within two runs. MSUB used a sacrifice bunt and wild pitch in the seventh inning to score two runs to tie the game at 3-3.
After going to extra innings, McNicoll led off the 11th with a double down the right field line. Oshiro, who already has one extra inning game winning hit this season, drove in McNicoll on a single down the right field line.
Dunaway (1-4) closed out the Yellowjackets in the bottom half of the inning with a fly out and back-to-back strikeouts to secure the 4-3 victory. Dorney went six innings, allowing one run on four hits before Eskil threw one inning of relief, giving up two runs.
"Gritty team win playing sound baseball throughout," said head coach
Kelly Gau. "Got great outings from Dorney and Dunaway. They each did a great job keeping guys off balance. We took great at bats throughout the game and proved to be difference in the end. The challenge is to come back tomorrow with the same intensity and attention to details."
The Saints face Montana State Billings tomorrow with a doubleheader starting at noon PST. Live stats and video of the games will be available on smusaints.com.
